TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's basketball team made a thrilling, late-game comeback and survival look easy Saturday thanks to having all the parts moving together.
Â
The Warriors leaned on another strong defensive effort while also getting superior shooting from deep and a balanced offensive attack, leading to a 65-61 come-from-behind California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal Poly Pomona at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, their first win over the Broncos in more than three years.
Â
It wasn't an easy cruise to victory, however, for Stan State (7-10, 4-8 CCAA). It trailed as late as 2 minutes, 35 seconds left in the second half and had to survive a missed go-ahead 3-pointer at the 17 seconds mark, as well as missed free throws with 6.6 seconds left that could have tied the game.
Â
The Warriors made four consecutive baskets under the five-minute mark to erase what was a four-point deficit at 57-53 and take a one-point, 61-60 lead. Cal Poly Pomona (8-8, 4-8 CCAA) had its opportunities to take back the lead, but it turned the ball over on each of its next two possessions, then missed an open 3-pointer that would've given it a 63-61 advantage.
Â
Marlon Short hit two free throws with 12.4 seconds left to make it a three-point game at 63-60 Stan State, and the Broncos were given yet another chance to at least tie the game when Christopher Mitchell was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. But he missed his first two free throws and made the last, leaving the game at 63-61 Stan State.
Tony Singleton iced the game by sinking both his free throws with five seconds left, and the Warriors earned their first win over Cal Poly Pomona since Dec. 1, 2018.
Â
The nation's No. 6 scoring defense once again held its opponent to 61 points or less, the eighth time in the Warriors' last nine games they've done that. The Warriors also held Cal Poly Pomona to under 41% shooting (40.7%), the seventh time in the last eight games they've done so.
Â
While the defense was doing its job, the offense was showing its rebound from Thursday's 45-point output. The Warriors nearly doubled their 3-pointer efficiency from two days ago. They  hit 11 of 22 tries for a 50.0% success rate, topping Thursday's 6-for-23 (26.1%) showing. It was their best performance in a game from beyond the arc in nearly three years, since also hitting 11 of 22 shots in a 97-88 win at Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 23, 2019.
Â
The Warriors had four scorers in double figures for the second time in a game this season (Dec. 20 vs. Holy Names).
Luis Salgado and
Marlon Short both led the team with 14 points each.
Tony Singleton added 13 and
Matt Bender scored 10.
Benno Zecic narrowly missed a rare double-double, scoring only two points but collecting nine rebounds and nine assists to go with four steals.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona was led by 16 points from Phoenix Shackelford and nine from BJ Standley. Stanislaus State outrebounded the Broncos, 34-30. Cal Poly Pomona scored 25 points off of 17 Stan State turnovers, but it shot just 28.6% from beyond the arc (8 for 28) and only 50% (5 for 10) from the free-throw line.
