Offense Continues to Roll as Warriors Drop Two at Concordia Kickoff Classic

IRVINE — The Stanislaus State softball team's offense was on point Saturday, totaling 18 hits across two games, but it also left 18 runners on base, as the Warriors dropped two games on day two of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Great Park, falling 4-1 to Western Oregon and 8-3 to Dominican.

Stanislaus State (2-2) had six different multi-hit performances in the lineup, led by five-hit days from both Madison Flexser (5 for 7, three doubles) and Sidney Crippen-Lay (5 for 8, double). Delaney Pamplin threw eight innings of relief across the two games, not allowing an earned run and striking out seven.

vs. WESTERN OREGON

Take away Western Oregon's (2-2) four-run bottom of the second, and it's an entirely different game for Stanislaus State. Logan Carlos' bases-loaded, three-run triple made it 3-0, and Zoie Recolan snuck a ground ball through the right side of the infield to score Carlos and make it 4-0.

That's all the scoring Western Oregon would do the entire game. The Wolves would not advance a runner past first base after that, but the Stanislaus State offense was missing the timely hit. The Warriors had base runners on in every inning but the fifth and stranded four runners in scoring position. Their lone run came in the top of the seventh on a two-out, infield RBI single from Crippen-Lay.

The top of the sixth was Stan State's best chance to get back into it. It loaded the bases with no outs on a leadoff infield single from Flexser and back-to-back walks. But a 1-2-3 double play kept them off the board and put two outs up, and a looking strikeout stranded two runners in scoring position.

Pamplin's first relief appearance of the day was a dominant one. She threw four shutout innings while only allowing two singles and a walk. She struck out two and only faced three over the minimum.

Western Oregon's Maddie Mayer (2-0) earned the win with six innings of shutout work in the circle. She struck out three and only issued two walks while scattering five hits.

vs. DOMINICAN

Stanislaus State stuck itself to a 3-0 first-inning lead against Dominican in the nightcap, but the Penguins (1-3) answered with six runs in its next two turns at the plate and didn't look back.

The Warriors' three-run rally in the bottom of the first was all with two outs. Crippen-Lay started it with a single, Melissa Spencer and Sarah Warden both reached while Crippen-Lay came in to score the first run of the game, and then Flexser doubled them both home to make it 3-0.

Dominican scored four times in the top of the second to take the lead for good at 4-3. Celeste Salas drove home two with a double, and both Jillian Lampa and Faith Erb brought in runs with RBI singles. The Penguins added to their lead in the third with small ball. Peyton Mott came in to score on a wild pitch, and Bella Romani bunted home Lauren Lapinid to make it 6-3. Both innings began with Dominican getting the first two batters on base.

Pamplin came in again to relieve, throwing four more innings and striking out five. She only allowed two unearned runs in the top of the seventh after it started with two errors by the defense. She did not allow a walk while surrendering just three hits.
