Cal Poly Pomona Uses High-Powered Offense to Top Warriors

TURLOCK — Joia Armstrong scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her first career double-double Saturday, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona came away with a 90-74 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

The freshman Armstrong doubled her previous season high in points (10) and matched her season high in rebounds while posting the third 20-point, 10-rebound double-double of the year for Stanislaus State (11-6, 6-5 CCAA). Da'Myiah Lewis had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the Warriors' first matchup against the Broncos (6-12, 5-9 CCAA) on Dec. 2, and Kyanna Davis scored 20 points and had 15 rebounds against Academy of Art on Nov. 20.

Liliana Marques scored 17 points on Saturday and Lewis had 11 to go with five steals, three rebounds and two assists. Taylor Pilot had six steals as the Warriors totaled 20 as a team, the second time they've had at least 20 takeaways in a game – both times against Cal Poly Pomona. Stanislaus State scored 33 points off 29 Broncos turnovers, tied for the most by an opponent this year (Cal State Monterey Bay, Jan. 20).

The Warriors' defense hadn't allowed as many as 70 points in a game all season, but the Cal Poly Pomona offense was on fire all night. The Broncos shot 53.7% in the game, the highest by a Stan State opponent in more than three years, since Central Washington shot 66.7% on Nov. 10, 2018. It was the first time the Warriors had allowed at least 90 points in more than three years, since UC San Diego scored 94 on Jan. 31, 2019.

The Broncos had three 20-point scorers led by Monica Todd's 24 on 11-for-17 (64.7%) shooting. Jayda Villareal scored 22 points and Ally Bates scored 21. No other Broncos scored as many as 10. CPP was excellent at the free-throw line, making 23 of 27 (85.2%) chances.

The Broncos stormed out of the gate, scoring 27 points in the first quarter and 22 in the second to lead 49-26 at halftime. Stanislaus State didn't go completely quiet, however. The Warriors made a brazen comeback attempt in the third quarter. A 12-2 run early in the period cut Cal Poly Pomona's lead from 25 to 15. Later, another 15-4 push over just two minutes made it an eight-point contest in a game Stan State had trailed by 25 on two separate occasions.

Armstrong scored nine of her 20 points in the third quarter alone, while Stanislaus State scored 29 as a team. But Breanne Ha put an abrupt halt to the Warriors' momentum with a 3-pointer right before the end of the third period, putting the Broncos' lead back at double digits, where it would never fall below again.

Stanislaus State's home stand continues next week when it hosts San Francisco State on Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
