Chico State Takes Advantage to Win Series Opener

TURLOCK — Visiting Chico State made a series-opening statement Friday against the Stanislaus State Baseball team, taking full advantage of free passes and hitting the ball all over the park to score 20 runs in a 20-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over the Warriors at Warrior Field.

Chico State (16-5, 9-3 CCAA) drew 13 walks and was hit by a pitch four times for a total of 17 free base runners. 10 of those 13 walks and two of the hit-by-pitches came around to score, accounting for more than half (12) of the Wildcats' 20 runs on the night. Chico State scored at least one run in every inning but the ninth, and had its leadoff batter reach safely in all nine innings.

Stanislaus State (7-11, 5-8 CCAA) wasn't silenced offensively. It scored six runs on 11 hits, including a home run from Alex Solis. Solis led the Warriors offensively, going 3 for 4 with a single, triple and home run to go with three RBIs, three runs scored and a walk. He only needed a double for the cycle, but was walked on four pitches in his final at-bat during the bottom of the eighth.

Former Warrior Ryan Tinsley (4-0) stayed undefeated on the year with five innings of work. Stanislaus State hit Tinsley around a bit and got him into jams, tagging him for three runs on six hits and two walks. But Stan State also stranded 11 runners on base Friday – six in scoring position.

Five players had multiple hits for Chico State and five had multiple RBIs. Matt Elser (2 for 4) and Danny Murphy (2 for 5) joined Solis with multi-hit performances for the Warriors.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one has been rescheduled for 11 a.m., with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
