TURLOCK — A closely contested series through day one continued to be so on day two, as the Stanislaus State softball team and San Francisco State split a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader for the second day on Saturday, with the Warriors winning game one, 3-2, and the Gators taking the nightcap, 6-4, at Warrior Field.
Â
Like its win on Friday, Stanislaus State (5-12, 3-9 CCAA) came from behind to win the opener. The Gators (12-10, 7-5 CCAA) took the lead in the third, and the Warriors answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half to go ahead 2-1. An insurance run in the bottom of the sixth ended up being huge, as SFSU had five base runners in the top of the seventh and scored an unearned run before finally stranding the tying run in scoring position, giving Stan State the 3-2 victory.
Â
San Francisco State scored early and often in game two, but the Warriors never let them get too far away. A first-inning run made it 1-0, but Stanislaus State tied it in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from
Jalyssa Ledesma. Three more SFSU runs in the top of the third made it 4-1, and again, Stan State answered with two runs in the bottom half on RBIs from
Sarah Warden and
Melissa Spencer, putting the score at 4-3.
Â
The Gators tacked on a run in the top of the fourth to push their lead to 5-3, and again the Warriors answered, this time in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI from Ledesma, making it 5-4. SFSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but the Warriors still didn't go quietly. Stan State nearly mounted a two-out rally, putting two runners on with two outs before grounding out to end the game.
