TURLOCK — More strong starting pitching carried the day Friday, as the Stanislaus State baseball team got its own strong start in the nightcap of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader versus visiting Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos rode a strong arm in game one and came from behind in game two to sweep the twinbill and clinch a series victory with 8-1 and 7-4 victories at Warrior Field.
Â
The Broncos (22-14, 17-9 CCAA) got seven innings of one-run ball from starter Noel Soto (4-0) in game one. He struck out six and walked none while only allowing four hits. Then, Stanislaus State's
Casey Carr went five innings in the nightcap and only allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts. He departed the game with a 4-3 lead after the Warriors (10-25, 8-22 CCAA) had struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit at the time.
Â
But Cal Poly Pomona jumped on the Warriors' bullpen for four runs in the top of the seventh, coming from behind to take a 7-4 lead. Eric Romo earned his fourth save of the season for the Broncos with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. The Broncos have now won seven consecutive games and 14 of their last 17.
Â
Trevor McInerney went 2 for 8 with a double and two RBIs in the doubleheader.
Jonluke Goldman and
Zach Jones also had hits in both games.
