Warriors Come Back to Beat Gators and Earn Series Split

SAN FRANCISCO — The offense didn't quit, the bullpen delivered, and the Stanislaus State baseball team came from behind Sunday to earn a California Collegiate Athletic Association series split on the road at San Francisco State with an 8-6 victory at Maloney Field.

The Gators (16-23, 11-20 CCAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the first with three walks and two hits, chasing Stanislaus State (13-28, 11-25 CCAA) starter Tony Jacob. That gave way to Noah Chelberg, who surrendered a single to the first batter he faced, but then closed out the first and wouldn't surrender another hit for the rest of the day.

Chelberg (2-3) provided the Warriors stability to come back with 6 1/3 shutout innings of relief, striking out four and scattering three walks. Trent Huff earned his second save of the year with two innings of shutout relief in the eighth and ninth, only allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Warriors went ahead for good with four runs in the fifth. The first five batters reached safely, with runs scoring on a Trevor McInerney RBI single, a sacrifice fly from Jonluke Goldman, and a two-run single from Joseph Hauck, making it 5-3.

Insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth made sure Stanislaus State stayed ahead when San Francisco State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. McInerney scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, drove home Cole Thompson in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, and Thompson singled home Goldman in the ninth.

Thompson led the offense with a four-hit day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two runs scored, and RBI and three stolen bases. It was the most stolen bases by a Warrior since Jayce Gardner also stole three against Shippensburg on Feb. 8, 2020. McInerney went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Warriors begin their season-ending home stand at 5 p.m. Tuesday with a non-conference game against Holy Names University. They then host Cal State San Marcos for a four-game CCAA series starting May 5. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
