HAYWARD, Calif.--- In a see saw affair, the hosts Cal State East Bay Pioneers came out on top 66-63 over the visiting Stan State Warriors.
Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 16 points.
Benno Zecic added 12 points, four assists and steals for Stan State.
FIRST HALF: A Tim Andreolli three gave Cal State East Bay (7-13, 5-9 CCAA) an early 13-7 lead in the first six minutes of the game.
Matt Bender's lay-up capped a mini 4-0 run by the Warriors as they cut their deficit to 13-11. Chris James' three with 8:46 left in the half increased the hosts' lead to double digits (28-17). Another Bender lay-up off a pass from
Benno Zecic capped a 17-5 run by the Warriors to give them a 34-33 lead with just one minute left in the half. Peyden White's free throws gave the Pioneers a 37-36 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: The beginning of the second half was like the first half until Stan State (8-12, 6-8 CCAA) took a 48-42 lead on a jumper by
Jeremiah Jones. A three by the Pioneer's Tim Andreolli cut the Warrior lead to just one (52-51) at the 8:06 mark of the half. The visitors increased their lead to 55-51 on a three by Jones off a pass from
Benno Zecic with seven minutes left in regulation. Another three by Andreolli gave the hosts a 56-55 lead, but Daniel Ameyay hit a jumper to give the Warriors back the lead (57-56) with 5:40 to go in the game. East Bay held the Warriors scoreless in the next two minutes and took a 60-57 lead. Stan State would not go away as Zecic made a lay-up to cut the deficit to 60-59 with 2:30 left in regulation. Garrett Pascoe scored the next three points to give the Pioneers a 63-59 lead. Once again, the Warriors cut the deficit to just one (64-63) on a lay-up by Jones with just 36 ticks on the clock. Pascoe's jumper on their next jumper gave the Pioneers a 66-63 lead. The Warriors had a chance to tie the game send it to overtime but it fell short as Cal State East Bay took the 66-63 victory.
TENTH STRAIGHT: Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 16 points for his tenth straight game scoring in double figures. Short has scored in double figures in all but two games this season for Stan State as he is averaging 15.2 points per game and shooting 46.6% from the field.
SWAT THAT SHOT: Stan State had four blocked shots on the afternoon with
Marlon Short leading the way with two.
Daniel Ameyaw and
Travion Williams each had one for the Warriors.
WON THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: The Warriors won the battle of the boards tonight, 31-30.
Travion Williams had eight to lead the way followed by
Marlon Short and
Benno Zecic each with five.
Jeremiah Jones grabbed four rebounds and
Kobe Ordonio had three.
ZECIC MOVIN' ON UP: Benno Zecic has 273 assists for his career now as a Warrior which places him in fifth place. He has 131 this season which is two away from moving into tenth place on the Stan State single season list.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will return home this Thursday, February 2 to host Cal Poly Humboldt at 7:30pm at The Fitz on Student Affairs Night. They will host Sonoma State at 3pm on Saturday, February 4 on Golden Valley Health Center Night.
