TURLOCK, Calif.--- The CCAA's leading scorer,
Tyler Tipton, scored his team and conference leading tenth and eleventh goals of the season both on penalty kicks but they weren't enough as Sonoma State rallied to defeat its hosts 3-2.
FIRST HALF: Stan State had a chance to take the led just three minutes into the match when Reinier ter Riet stopped
Julian Madrigal's shot on goal attempts. Twelve seconds later, the Seawolves were called for a hand ball in the box and
Tyler Tipton connected on the penalty kick to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. Sonoma State (5-6-2, 3-3 CCAA) had a chance to tie the match in the fifth minute when
Robby Rosas made one of his seven saves on the day. Tipton looked he was going to double the lead in the 12
th minute but ter Riet made one of his nine saves in the match. The Warriors had another chance to double their lead when
Alecxander Cuellar's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Seawolf keeper.
Edgar Castaneda's shot on goal attempt to double the Warriors' lead was stopped the guests' keeper in the 29
th minute. With seven minutes left in the half, Sonoma State tied the score at 1-1 when Sonoma State's Elliott Stanley scored the game-tying goal. It looked like Sonoma State was going to take the lead heading into the half, but Rosas stopped Alejandro Zarate's attempt to send the match into the half tied at 1-1.
SECOND HALF: Just one minute into the second half, the Seawolves were called for another foul in the box and
Tyler Tipton scored his second penalty kick of the match and eleventh goal of the season to give Stan State the 2-1 lead. The hosts didn't hold the lead for long as they were called for a foul in the box and Patrick Neill connected on the penalty kick to tie the match at 2-2 in the 48
th minute.
Tyler Tipton had a chance for his third goal of the match in the 54
th minute when Reinier ter Riet made another stop. Six minutes later,
Finn Hoffmann's chance to give the Warriors the lead was stopped by Sonoma's keeper.
Julian Madrigal had a chance to give Stan State (3-8-2, 0-4-2 CCAA) the lead in the 64
th minute, when ter Riet made one more save.
Robby Rosas made another save for Stan State in the 63
rd minute when he stopped Rios Lara's shot on goal attempt. Sonoma State took the 3-2 lead when Ian Reis scored on a pass from Jose Rios Lara in the 71
st minute. It looked like the Warriors were going to tie the match at 3-3, when
Elio Corral's shot was stopped by Sonoma's keeper with 19 minutes left in the match. Neither team had another shot attempt in the final minutes as Sonoma State took the 3-2 CCAA victory.
STATS: Stan State out-shot the Seawolves 20-19 including 11-10 on shot on goal attempts. The Seawolves had an 8-5 corner kick advantage.
Robby Rosas recorded seven saves in goal for the Warriors. Reiner ter Riet had nine saves in goal for Sonoma State.
TIPTON: Tyler Tipton scored his tenth and eleventh goals of the season which lead the CCAA and the Warriors. He is now tied for second on the Warriors' single season top ten list in goals scored and tied for fifth on the single season points list with 22. Tipton is a perfect five-for-five in penalty kick attempts this season.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return to Southern California for a pair of matches against two CCAA schools in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Warriors will be in Carson for a 7pm match with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, October 20. They will conclude their weekend with a 2pm starting match at No. 12 Cal State Los Angeles. Stan State will return home for the final time the weekend of October 27-20. The Warriors will host No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, October 27 at 7pm. Their last home match of the regular season which will be Senior Day will be at 2pm on Sunday, October 29 against San Francisco State.
