Women’s Soccer Ends Season in CCAA First Round Heartbreaker

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State ended its season this afternoon with a 2-1 double overtime heartbreaking loss to the visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks in the First Round of the CCAA Women's Soccer Championships at Warrior Stadium.  Aliah Avila scored the Warriors' goal on an assist from Marivic Lek-Miro in the 78th minute.  Malia Allen had a career high 14 saves in goal for the hosts.
 
FIRST HALF: The Warriors had the match's first chance for the early lead, but Carson Thomson-Terrel stopped Jocelyn Lopez's shot on goal attempt in the fifth minute.  Malia Allen made four of her career high 14 saves in the next seven minutes including stopping Morgan Young's attempt in the 13th minute to keep the match scoreless.  Emilia Long had two chances to give the Jacks the lead in the 23rd minute, but Allen made two more saves.  Stan State had two chances late in the half for the lead, but Aliah Avila's attempts went wide of the goal to send the match into the half scoreless.
 
SECOND HALF:  Stan State (8-6-5) came out on fire in the second with Alexis Brewah recording two shot attempts in the first four minutes of the new half including one being stopped by Carson Thomson-Terrel in the 48th minute.  The Warriors had two more chances to take the lead in the 64th minute when Thomson-Terrel made two of her seven saves stopping Reyna Dismukes' and Marivic Lek-Miro's shot attempts.  The Warriors took the 1-0 lead in the 78th minute when Aliah Avila scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Marivic Lek-Miro.
Three minutes later, Cal Poly Humboldt tied the match at 1-1 on an Erin Mohr penalty kick.  Daisy Martinez saw her chance to be the hero in the final minute, but her shot sailed high over the goal to send the match into overtime.
 
OVERTIME PERIODS: Alexis Brewah had two chances to give Stan State back the lead in the first five minutes of the overtime period but both shots sailed wide of the goal.  Brewah had another chance in the 99th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.  Right after that, Sunny Mancilla saw her chance to give Stan State lead go left of the goal. Cal Poly Humboldt's shot attempt came in the final minute of the first overtime, but Erin Mohr's attempt went high over the net to send the match into the second overtime period still tied at 1-1.
 
Just two minutes into the second overtime, the Jacks took the 2-1 lead on a goal by Frida Duran Arellano off a double assist from Kylea Becker and Emilia Long.  The Warriors had two chances in the 107th minute to tie the match, but Carson Thomson-Terrel stopped Haylee Heffner and Makeila Yancey's shot on goal attempt.  Stan State had one more chance with 15 seconds left in the match, but the Jack keeper stopped Aliah Avila's attempt as Humboldt took the 2-1 double overtime victory.
 
STATS:  Cal Poly Humboldt out-shot the Warriors 29-22 including 16-8 in shot on goal attempts.  Stan State had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.  Malia Allen had a career high 14 saves in goal for the Warriors while Carson Thomson-Terrel had seven saves for the Jacks.
 
SEASON ENDING MATCH:  Stan State ended its season today with the loss to Cal Poly Humboldt.  This was the fourth straight time that the Warriors advanced to the CCAA post-season tournament.  The Jacks will now play Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA semi-finals this Friday, November 10 at 7pm.  In the first CCAA semi-final match, Cal State San Marcos will face Cal State Los Angeles.  The winners of the semi-finals will be at 1pm in the championship match on Sunday, November 12.  All three matches will take place at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, Calif., on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.
