Clutch Free-Throw Caps a 64-63 Comeback Win at Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Stan State finishes out their season on a high-note, taking the last second win over Cal State San Bernardino with a game-winning free throw to take the win. Makayla Rose led all scorers with 26 points, five steals, and four assists, including the winning free throw to give the Warriors their final win of the year.

FIRST QUARTER: Rose started the quarter with nine of the team's 13 points, including an assist and a steal, while Ashmeen Sran became the Warriors spark plug off the bench, connecting on an assist of her own and finishing with 14 points in just 17 minutes of action. She shot an impressive 6-for-12 from the field, snatching two steals in the process. The 'Yotes had an efficient day of their own, shooting 46% in the first period to go up eight.

SECOND QUARTER: Lyric Richardson got sent to the foul line twice in the second quarter, splitting both of her trips at the free throw line in the opening four minutes. Richardson also picked up a block in the quarter before being subbed out. Soon after, Rose got her offense rolling before a four-minute scoring drought for the Warriors that was ended by a Joia Armstrong jumper. Armstrong finished with a near double-double of eight points, nine rebounds, and three steals. The scoring drought however, put Stan State in position to chase, down 33-22.

THIRD QUARTER: Sran and Liliana Marques found a flow on the offensive end to start the second half, getting a few layups to go in the paint. Alexis Woodson would also make her way into the scoring column with a jumper at the halfway point of the period. Despite a steal and fast break bucket from Rose in the final seconds of the third, the Warriors were still in the chase at 48-39.

FOURTH QUARTER: The Warriors found new life in the fourth quarter, as two big three-pointers swung the momentum back in their favor to close the deficit to just two points with 4:20 left in regulation. Sran scored five-straight points for Stan State in a span of two minutes in the back-and-forth slugfest. A Joia Armstrong steal and Rose layup brought the Warriors within one, as a free throw battle would decide the victor in the final 30 seconds of play. Rose managed to tie the game with free throws at the 18-second mark, that gave the 'Yotes one last opportunity to get the win. In San Bernardino's final possession, a point-blank layup was passed up for a contested three-pointer that was off the mark. In the following possession, Rose was fouled on a coast-to-coast layup attempt with just a second left on the clock. She would sink her first free throw attempt to seal the deal, missing the second as time expired on the Warriors' 64-63 win in their final regular season game of 2022-23.
