LOS ANGELES, Calif.--- Despite winning the battle of the boards 36-28, Stan State fell 84-68 to the Cal State Los Angeles this evening in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game in Los Angeles. With the win, the Golden Eagles split the season series with Stan State.
Kobe Ordonio paced the Warriors with 18 points while
Mahda Fallay added a career high 13 points.
Marlon Short added 12 points for the Warriors.
FIRST HALF: The first couple minutes of the game went back and with Cal State Los Angeles building a 19-13 lead on a three by Ky Juan Cannaday eight minutes into the first half. A
Marlon Short dunk off a steal by
Travion Williams and assist by
Jeremiah Jones capped a 13-3 run by the Warriors as they took a 26-22 lead at the 7:48 mark of the half. A jumper by
Kobe Ordonio increased Stan State's lead to double digits (41-31) with less than a minute left on the clock. A lay-up by Dominic Escobar cut the Golden Eagle deficit to 41-33 heading into the half.
SECOND HALF: A three by
Benno Zecic off a pass from
Marlon Short gave Stan State (9-14, 7-10 CCAA) a 44-35 lead just a minute into the new stanza. Six minutes later, a three by Deuce Walker capped a 15-5 run by Cal State Los Angeles as the Golden Eagles took a 50-49 lead. A jumper by
Kobe Ordonio off a pass from
Will Pallesi gave the Warriors back the lead, 51-50, on their next possession. Cal State Los Angeles (10-13, 7-10 CCAA) outscored its hosts 18-5 in the next five minutes as the hosts took a 68-56 lead. A three by Zecic off a
Jeremiah Jones pass cut the deficit to 68-61 with 6:46 on the clock. A free throw by
Travion Williams made it a two-possession game (70-64) with a little under five minute left in regulation. The Golden Eagles finished the game outscoring Stan State 14-4 to take the 84-68 victory.
STILL HOPES FOR A POST-SEASON BERTH: Even with the loss this evening, Stan State still has hopes for a berth in the 2022-23 CCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, March 2-4 at Stan State. The Warriors are in a three-way tie for eighth place with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles. They are just one-game out of the fifth spot (San Francisco State and Chico State) and two games out of the fourth spot (Sonoma State).
13TH STRAIGHT: Marlon Short recorded his 13
th straight game of scoring in double figures with 12 points in 20 minutes. He went five-for-ten from the and two-for-two from the line. Short also had two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot this evening. He has scored in double digits in all but two games this season.
CAREER NIGHT: Mahda Fallay scored a career high 13 points off the bench for Stan State this season in 17 minutes. He was three-for-three from the field and seven-for-eight from the line. Fallay had five rebounds for the Warriors.
THREE AWAY: Benno Zecic is three away from moving into fourth place on Stan State's career assist list and 13 from moving into second place on the single season assist list. He has 294 assists in his career and 152 this season. With his two steals this evening, Zecic is eighth on teh single season steals list with 42at Stan State. For his career, Zecic has scored 407 points, dished out 294 assists, grabbed 251 rebounds and recorded 110 steals.
