CARSON, Calif.--- Stan State took this weekend's conference series from the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros three games to one as Warriors won the suspended game this afternoon 4-3 in ten innings. The Toros took the series finale 12-4.
Patrick Sweeney (2-0) picked up the win while
Damian Vallejos recorded his first save of the season.
Alex Solis drove in two of the Warriors' four runs and scored the the game-winner in the suspended game. In the series finale,
Mac Cabero had three of the Warriors' nine hits.
SUSPENDED GAME: Stan State(14-12, 7-9 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead on a two-out two-run double by
Alex Solis which scored
Flavio Perez and
Tyler Van Dyk. The Toros tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run by Justin Abercrombie in the Toro second. They took a 3-12lead on a solo home run by Vincent Temesevary in the bottom of the third inning.
Stan State tied the game at 3-3 in their its half of the fifth.
Ryan Leonesio had a lead-off double and was out when
Kyle Rachels reached on a fielder's choice.
Robert Valdivia was hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second with one out. Rachels scored on a Van Dyk double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3.
Perez had a lead-off double for the Warriors in the top of the tenth.
Alex Solis reached on a fielder's choice which Perez was out at third on for the inning's first out. With two outs,
Jacob Baker singled through the left side to advance Solis to second. Pinch-hitter
Danny Murphy reached on a fielding error by the Toros' outfielder which Solis scored what proved to be the game-winning run.
Damian Vallejos came in the bottom of the tenth inning and retired CUSDH in order to preserve the 4-3 Warrior victory.
Patrick Sweeney picked up the win to improve to 2-0 with a scoreless 0.1 inning of relief pitching.
WARRIOR HITTERS: The Warriors had ten hits in the game with five players with two hits apiece in
Robert Valdivia,
Tyler Van Dyk,
Flavio Perez,
Jacob Baker and
Ryan Leonesio. Solis drove in two runs for the Warriors. He was one of four different Warriors to cross home plate including Van Dyk, Perez and
Kyle Rachels.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Patrick Sweeney (2-0) picked up his second win of the season with a scoreless 0.1 innings of relief pitching.
Damian Vallejos recorded his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless tenth inning.
Tony Jacob recorded the no-decision in the start. Jacob pitched eight innings, giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out seven and walking two.
Alex Kendrick pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief pitching, walking one and striking out one.
SERIES FINALE: Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-8, 6-3 CCAA) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth and took the series finale 12-4. The key hit in the six-run second inning was two-run triple by Anthony Accordino. The Toros added another run in the second to take a 12-0 lead with a five-run fifth inning.
Stan State scored its four runs in the Warrior half of the seventh inning.
Jacob Baker led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He went to second on a single by
JD Madrigal. Baker scored on a run scoring single by
Luke Davies.
Robert Valdivia reached on a Toro error which loaded the bases. Pinch hitter
Jonluke Goldman drew a bases loaded walk which brought in Madrigal. With one out,
Casey Carr's sacrifice fly scored Valdivia to cut the deficit to 12-4. The Toros retired the next batter on a fly out to center field.
Mac Cabero had a two-out single to left field to load the bases, but the next batter struck out swinging as Toros were up 12-4.
The duo of Josh Castillo and Zachariah McCorvey held the Warriors scoreless in the final two innings while allowing just one hit and walking two to preserve the 12-4 Toro victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Mac Cabero went three-for-five and
Robert Valdivia was two-for-five with a run scored. Stan State had nine hits on the day with one of Valdivia's hits being a double.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Bobby Garcia and
Kody Cardoza combined to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out two.
Noah Chelberg (0-2) picked up the loss in the start. He pitched 1.2 innings, giving up four this, walking two and giving up six runs of which only one was earned.
Will Crookham and
Trent Huff combined to pitch three innings of relief, giving up eight hits, six runs (two earned) while striking out five and walking one.
JUST PERCENTAGE POINTS OUT OF SIXTH: With its 3-1 weekend, Stan State is in seventh place in the CCAA just 0.017 percentage points out of sixth place which is held by Cal Poly Pomona (5-6, .455). The Warriors are 7-9 in league play with a .438 percentage points. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth the CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament in Seaside, Calif. The top six teams are Cal State San Bernardino (10-3, .769), Cal State Monterey Bay (11-4, .733), Chico State (5-2, .714), Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-3, .667), Cal State East Bay (4-4, .500) and Cal Poly Pomona (5-6, .455).
UP NEXT: Stan State returns home to entertain Cal State Los Angeles in a four-game CCAA series. The Golden Eagles went 3-1 against Cal State San Marcos this weekend. The two teams will begin the weekend series with a 6pm single game on Friday, March 24. The series will continue with a 1pm starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 25. The two teams will conclude the series with a noon starting single game on Sunday, March 26.
