Warriors Win One of Two in Season Finale at San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Stan State locked back for their final two games against the Cougars following the tough game two loss on Friday evening. Getting off to an early 3-0 start, the Warriors would hold that lead into the final inning for their first win of the series. Game four of the matchup was a low scoring effort, capped off by a 1-0 victory by the Cougars despite being outhit by the visiting Warriors 4-3.

GAME ONE: Much like the opening game of the series, the Warriors got on the board early in the 1st inning to get off to a 2-0 start on San Marcos. Sacrifice flies and timely base running helped the Warriors score all of their runs, including their last in the 3rd inning.

SCORING SUMMARY: Sheridan Gulley once again got the team going with a sacrifice fly to right field that left room for Katie Thornsberry to score her first run of the day. Madison Flexser followed through with her own sacrifice fly that brought Emily Bigley home for the team's second run. Flexser hit one more sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning, marking her second RBI and Thornsberry's second run of the afternoon.

CLEAN AS A WHISTLE: The Warriors cleaned up their fielding this time around with an errorless game on defense, highlighted by 21 putouts and seven assists. Karli DalBianco and Thornsberry led the teams putouts with a combined 11, while Jessell Lewis earned the win at pitcher with three assists and just as many strikeouts.

RBIs AND SACRIFICE FLIES: The Warriors hitters earned three RBIs and on three sacrifice flies for the game to score all of their runs. Thornsberry, Gulley, and Flexser were the team's most crucial batters and baserunners when it came to setting up their team on offense.

GAME TWO: A scoreless first five innings bounced in the Cougars favor after both teams were fairly quiet on the offensive end. A San Marcos double to left center field put them up a run, still giving the Warriors an opportunity to answer back in the 7th inning. Unfortunately a single Warriors' left just one runner on base at the game's conclusion.

SCORING SUMMARY: The Warriors had four hits and one double in the final matchup, leaving five total runners on base. Cherise Mori, Madison Flexser, and Sarah Warden combined for all the Warriors trips to the bag to close out their regular season.

DEFENSIVE PROWESS: Cal State San Marcos posted double digit putouts and assists in an effort to shutout the Warriors from getting on the board. The Cougars needed 21 putouts and 10 assists to keep Stan State at bay in the close out game of the series.

OUTHITTING THE HITTERS: Despite the loss, the Warriors still managed to outhit the Cougars 4-3 through seven innings of action. The Cougars did however leave one less runner on base for the game, abandoning three runners on the bag to Stan State's four.

UP NEXT: The Warriors will finish their 2023 season with a 13-32 regular season record, going 7-28 in the conference. The team will regroup and revamp ahead of next year's go-round, with more schedule details to be announced.
