TURLOCK, Calif.-- Even though Stan State lost 4-1 to Sonoma State on Senior Day this afternoon, the Warriors remain in contention for a berth for the post-season. Stan State is in the sixth spot heading into the final four games of the regular season at Cal State East Bay (May 4-6) and 1.5 games ahead of CSU Dominguez Hills for the sixth and final spot for the CCAA Baseball Championships (May 10-13). Prior to today's game, the Warriors recognized their five seniors in
Casey Carr,
Bobby Garcia,
Tony Jacob,
Maxwell Pappas, and
Anthony Ramirez.
Sonoma State (19-21, 13-19 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead on a two-out solo home run to right center field by Chris Ortiz, his sixth of the season. The Seawolves doubled their lead in their half, 2-0, of the fourth inning. Ortiz had a one-out single and advanced to second on a walk to Shane Callison. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch and scored on ground out to third base by Kenny Decelle.
The Warriors cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mac Cabero walked and scored on a one-out double by
Alexander Cummings to cut the Seawolf lead to 2-1.
The Seawolves added insurance runs in the seventh and in the eighth to increase their lead to 4-1 heading into the Warrior half of the ninth inning.
Kyle Rachels had a one-out double down the left field line, but he was stranded their as Jake Dent (2-4) induced the final two Warriors to ground out to short and to third to preserve the 4-1 Sonoma State victory.
WARRIORS HITTERS: Stan State (24-21, 17-18 CCAA) had three hits on the day one each by
Kyle Rachels,
Mac Cabero, and
Alexander Cummings. Cabero had a run batted in while Cummings scored a run. Both of Rachels' and Cummings' hits were doubles.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Maxwell Pappas (3-4) suffered the loss in the start for Stan State. He pitched six innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out four and walking three.
Will Crookham and
Caleb Bertoncini combined to pitch three relief innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking two.
STILL ALIVE: With just four games left in the regular season, Stan State sits in the sixth and final spot for the six-team 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships, May 10-13, at the Otter Sports Complex on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif. The Warriors' magic number is three with Cal State Dominguez Hills and with Sonoma State two (combined Stan State victories and either Toros or Seawolves losses). The winner of the CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
