Stan State Defeats Pioneers 11-2 in the Opening Round of the CCAA’s

SEASIDE, Calif.--   Stan State pounded out 14 hits and scored 11 runs in the Warriors' 11-2 opening round game of the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships at the Otters Sports Complex in Seaside, Calif.  Five Warriors had multiple-hit games in JD Madrigal, Robert Valdivia, Mac Cabero, Danny Murphy, and Kyle RachelsTony Jacob picked up the win to improve to 4-4 on the season.  Stan State will now play No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay tomorrow morning at 9:30am in the double elimination tournament in Seaside.
 
The Warriors took advantage of two Cal State East Bay errors in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Robert Valdivia had a lead-off infield single and went to second when Kyle Rachels reached on an error.  Flavio Perez loaded the bases when he reached on an error.  Alex Solis drove in Valdivia with the games's first run on a sacrifice fly.  Mac Cabero made it 2-0 when he drove home Rachels with a successful suicide squeeze play.
 
Stan State (27-23) added another run in the second on a two-out triple by Valdivia which scored Danny Murphy who reached on a double. 
 
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run second inning capped by a two-out run scoring double by Samuel Esparza.
 
The Warriors broke the game open with a four-run third inning keyed by a two-run home run by Mac Cabero to give Stan State a 6-2 lead.  They added three more runs to take a 9-2 lead capped by a Kyle Rachels' two-out double that scored Valdivia. 
 
Tony Jacob (4-4) and the Warriors shut down Cal State East Bay (27-24) the rest of the game as they took the 9-2 opening round victory.
 
STAN STATE HITTERS:  The Warriors scored 11 runs on 14 hits.  JD Madrigal went four-for-five with a run batted in and a run scored while Robert Valdivia was three-for-five with three runs batted in and two runs scored.  Mac CAbero drove in four runs going two-for-four and scoring a run.  Kyle Rachels and Danny Murphy went a combined four-for-nine with two runs batted in and scoring two runs.
 
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Stan State's Tony Jacob picked up the win, pitching five innings of one-hit ball, striking out five, walking six and giving up two runs.  The trio of Noah Chelberg, Damian Vallejos, and Kody Cardoza went a combined five innings, giving up three hits and no runs while striking out two and walking two.
 
WARRIORS ADVANCE: Stan State advances now to the double-elimination tournament and will face No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay tomorrow at 9:30am. 
 
REGIONALLY RANKED:  The Warriors are one of five CCAA teams ranked in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll.  They are seventh while Cal State Monterey Bay is first followed by Cal State San Bernardino and Point Loma.  Rounding out the top eight are Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly Pomona, Hawaii Hilo, Stan State and San Francisco State. The winners of the CCAA, PacWest and GNAC tournaments will receive each of the leagues' automatic bids.
