SEASIDE, Calif.-- Stan State Warriors ended their season with a 10-1 loss in the elimination game of the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships this evening in Seaside, Calif. The Warriors ended their season with a 27-25 overall record.
Alex Solis accounted for the Warriors' run on a solo home run in the second inning.
Cal Poly Pomona (28-20) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brent Cota had a lead-off single. He went to third when Johnny Pappas walked. Each runner advanced a base on a wild pitch. With one out, Marco Malerba drove in Cota on a ground out to
Mac Cabero at second base. The Broncos took a 2-0 lead when Pappas scored on a wild pitch.
The Warriors cut the Bronco lead in half (2-1) on
Alex Solis' third home run of the season, a lead-off solo home run in the second inning. Cal Poly Pomona came right back with a three-run third to increase its lead to 4-1. Malbera's two-out two-run home run was the key hit of the inning.
The Broncos added two more runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. They added another insurance run in the eighth to take a 7-1 lead. Cal Poly Pomona broke the game opener with a three-run ninth to take a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Pomona starter, Noel Soto (4-3) shut down the Warriors in the ninth as the Broncos took the 100-1 victory. Solo pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and a run while striking out eight and walking no one to end the Warriors' run in the CCAA Baseball Championships.
STAN STATE HITTERS: The Warriors had five hits on the evening. Five Warriors had one hit apiece each in
Robert Valdivia,
Alex Solis,
Mac Cabero,
JD Madrigal, and
Danny Murphy. Solis had a solo home run, his third of the season and second of the tournament. Madrigal had his fourth double of the tournament and twelfth of the season.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Maxwell Pappas (4-5) suffered the loss in the start for Stan State.
Noah Chelberg and
Anthony Ramirez combined to pitch six innings of relief for the Warriors.
REGIONALLY RANKED: The Warriors are one of five CCAA teams ranked in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll. They are seventh while Cal State Monterey Bay is first followed by Cal State San Bernardino and Point Loma. Rounding out the top eight are Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly Pomona, Hawaii Hilo, Stan State and San Francisco State. The winners of the CCAA, PacWest and GNAC tournaments will receive each of the leagues' automatic bids.
