TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State outshot Fresno Pacific 11-9 this evening, but the Sunbirds connected on two of their shot attempts to give them their 2-1 victory in an exhibition match at Warrior Stadium. With the victory, Fresno Pacific captured the Inaugural CA-99 Cup Match. The Warriors will host UC Merced this Monday, August 28 at 7pm in their second and final exhibition match and the Cowbell Cup Match.
FIRST HALF: The Sunbirds took the early 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game when Nadia Flores scored on an unassisted goal. They didn't have the lead for long as the Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in the 15
th minutes. Stan State's goal came from
Makeila Yancey connected on a ball from
Jocelyn Lopez.
The hosts had a chance to take the 2-1 lead in the 41
st minute, but
Kayla Perez's shot sailed wide right. Two minutes later though, the Sunbirds took the 2-1 lead as Maria Eir Magnusdottir assisted on what proved to be the game-winner by Karyssa Lopez in the 43
rd minute.
SECOND HALF: The second half was evenly played. The Warriors had a chance to tie the game at 2-2 when
Alexis Brewah's shot sailed wide left in the 53
rd minutes. With ten minutes left in the game,
Kaley Miller's chance to tie the game at 2-2 was stopped by the Sunbirds' Birgitta Eggetsottir. The hosts had two more chances to tie the game in the final minutes, but
Kaia Mills' shot was stopped by FPU's goalkeeper and Miller's shot sailed wide right.
GOALKEEPERS: Malia Allen had one save in the first half for the Warriors while
Natalia Ochoa made three saves in the second half. Birgitta Eggertsdottir had four saves in goal for the Sunbirds.
UP NEXT: Stan State will host UC Merced in its final tune-up before the regular season this Monday, August 28 at 7pm in the Cowbell Cup Match. The Warriors will begin the regular season on Friday, September 1 in Monmouth, Ore., for an early season regional match-up with Western Oregon at 2pm. Their home opener will be Friday, September 8 at 7pm versus Southern Oregon.
