Warrior Women’s Soccer to Travel to Oregon to Begin 2023 Season

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After two exhibition matches, Stan State will begin its 2023 regular season on the road for two West Regional matchups in Monmouth, Ore.  The Warriors will face Western Oregon this Friday, September 1 at 2pm.  They will end their trip to Oregon with an 11am starting match-up with Saint Martin's on Sunday, September 3. 
 
TWO EXHIBITION MATCHES:  The Warriors went 1-0-1 in their two exhibition matches.  They lost 2-1 to Fresno Pacific in in the Inaugural CA-99 Cup Match this past Friday.  Makeila Yancey scored on a ball from Jocelyn Lopez for Stan State's goal.  Last night, Stan State rallied back to tie UC Merced 5-5, but the hosts won in penalty kicks 5-4.  The Warriors trailed 4-0 heading into the final forty-three minutes of regulation and came back to tie the match at 5-5.  Alexis Brewah scored two goals and had two assists including on the game-tying goal in the 80th minute on a ball to Haylee HeffnerKaley Miller and Alisha Garcia also scored goals for the Warriors and Sunny Mancilla and Yancey added assists.  Lindsey Lumm, Natalia Ochoa, and Malia Allen each had two saves in goal for the Warriors. Connecting on penalty kicks for Stan State were Aliah Avilla, Kaia Mills, Shauna Johnston, Mancilla, and Ochoa.  Allen stopped the final Bobcat penalty kick attempt as the Warriors captured the Cowbell Cup. 
 
LAST SEASON:  Stan State finished the 2022 campaign as the CCAA co-regular season champions with Sonoma State University.  The Warriors went 10-4-4 overall and 7-2-2 in the CCAA.  They went 6-2-2 in their final ten matches of the season including at one point winning their last five straight matches.  The Warriors return All-CCAA honorees Alexis Brewah (First Team), Sabrina Cabrera (First Team), Sunny Mancilla (Honorable Mention), and Jocelyn Lopez (Honorable Mention). Brewah was the CCAA Newcomer of the Year and Cabrera was the Midfielder of the Year.  Both Brewah and Cabrera earned All-West Region honors. 
 
PICKED TO WIN THE CCAA:  Stan State women's soccer is picked to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) according to the 2023 CCAA Preseason Women's Soccer Poll that was released by the conference office today.  The Warriors, under the direction of head coach Gabriel Bolton, received four of the twelve first place votes.
 
WESTERN OREGON:  The Wolves went 7-6-5 last season including 4-6-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).  Chloe Smith returns after scoring five goals and assisting on two others and recording three game-winning goals.  Brianna Kobi scored three goals and had an assist as did Savannah Taylor last season for the Wolves.  Isabella Lopez posted a 1.59 goals against average with a .688 saves percentage in goal for Western Oregon.  Stan State leads the all-time series 4-0-1.  The last meeting ended in a 2-2 tie in 2018 in Monmouth, Ore.
 
SAINT MARTIN'S:  The Saints went 5-10-2 last season and 3-9-2 in the GNAC.  Maria Pagnutta scored five goals in 2022 with one game-winning goal.  Mia Fleming had four assists to go with her one goal.  Ali Campigotto posted a 1.14 goals against average with a .843 saves percentage.  Stan State holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series including a 4-3 overtime win in 2013.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will have its regular season home opener on Friday, September 8 when the Warriors entertain Southern Oregon with a 7pm set kick-off.  The Warriors will host Dominican that Sunday, September 10 at 6pm.
