Men’s Soccer Continues Home Stand Hosting Academy of Art and No. 8 Chico State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  The Warrior men's soccer team will continue their season long five-match this week with a pair of non-conference matches.  Stan State will host Academy of Art this Tuesday, September 19 at 7pm.  This Saturday, September 23 at 4:30pm, the Warriors will face No. 8 Chico State in a rare non-conference match-up.  
 
UPDATE ON THE WARRIORS:  Stan State is 2-3 after splitting its two matches last week.  The Warriors lost 1-0 at Fresno Pacific on Thursday but rebounded with a 3-2 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in its home opener on Saturday.  Tyler Tipton has scored a team leading four goals for eight points with one game-winning goal.  Edgar Castaneda is next on the team with seven points (three goals, one assist, one game-winning goal) followed by Finn Hoffmann with three points (one goal, one assist).  Three Warriors have one assist each in Chase Koptieff, Kai Perez, and Leonardo Muniz-Gallegos.  Robby Rosas has a 1.80 goals against average with a .719 saves percentage and 23 saves. 
 
LAST MATCHES: The Warriors went 1-1 last week.  They started the week with a 1-0 loss at Fresno Pacific on Thursday.  Stan State bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in its home opener on Saturday.  Tyler Tipton scored two of the Warriors' three goals in their victory including the game-winner with 15 minutes left in the match on a penalty kick.  Edgar Castaneda scored Stan State's second goal with Chase Koptieff and Leonardo Muniz-Gallegos recording assists. 
 
FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH:  John Powell'11 returned to his alma mater as the Warriors' head men's soccer coach when he was hired this Spring after spending the past two seasons on the sidelines at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Powell guided the Nighthawks to a 15-4-3 record this season including an appearance in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four Final (Elite Eight).  He was the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year and guided the Nighthawks to their best season in program history.  They captured the GNAC regular season title and won three NCAA Division II Tournament matches, before losing 1-0 to the National Champion Runner-up, Colorado State-Pueblo.  He coached twelve All-GNAC honorees and four All-Region players during his two-years at NNU. In his four seasons coaching at Stan State and Northwest Nazarene with a 29-22-3 overall record. 

HOME STAND CONTINUES:  Stan State's five-match home stand continues this week hosting Academy of Art (Tues., Sept. 19 at 7pm) and Chico State (Sat., Sept. 23 at 4:30pm).  This will be the Warriors' final two non-conference matches of the regular season.  Stan State will face Chico State later this season in the match that counts toward conference standings in Chico.  

CCAA LEADERS:  Tyler Tipton, Edgar Castaneda, and Robby Rosas are listed in the top ten seven statistical categories in the recent CCAA statistical report. Tipton is tied for first with his four goals and .800 goals per game average.  He is tied for sixth with his eight points and 1.80 points per game average.  Castaneda is tied for fourth with three goals and .600 goals per game average. He is tied for ninth with seven points and 1.40 points per game average.  Rosas is third with his 3.50 saves per match average and 23 total saves while he is ninth with his .719 saves percentage.
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  In the latest NCAA Division II statistical report, Tyler Tipton is 20th with his four goals and 23rdwith his .800 goals per game average.  
 
CCAA OPENER:  Coach Powell and the 2023 Warriors will begin their CCAA season on September 29 at 4:30pm hosting Cal State San Marcos on Student Affairs Night. This will be the beginning of an 11-match CCAA schedule. Stan State will look to qualify for the six-team CCAA Men's Soccer Championships.  The Semi-finals and Finals of the CCAA Men's Soccer Championships will be hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Calif., Nov. 10-12.  The First Round is set for Sunday, Nov. 5 at the site of the higher seed (either the third or fourth 
seed). 
 
ACADEMY OF ART: The Urban Knights enter their match with Stan State with a 0-3-3 record.  They went 0-1-1 last week with a 1-1 tie against UC Santa Cruz and a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Saint Mary's (Tex.).  Joey Glaab leads the team with his three goals.  Three players each have an assist for Academy of Art in Alejando Palos, Elvis Mensah, and Abraham Valencia.  Jaiden Brooks has a 2.67 goals against average with a .619 saves percentage and 26 saves.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with the Urban Knights 3-1-2.  The Warriors won the last meeting in 2021 in Turlock 1-0 in overtime.  Jorge Lara scored the golden goal off a cross from Daniel Gomez at the 99:16 mark of overtime.  
 
NO. 8 CHICO STATE:  The Wildcats, who are ranked eighth in the latest United Soccer Coaches/NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Poll, enters Saturday afternoon's contest with Stan State with a 6-0 record.  They have not given up a goal in their first six matches.  Last week, Chico State defeated Biola 1-0 and Dominican (Calif.) 3-0 both in Chico.  Miles Rice leads the team with his ten points (four goals, two assists) and two game-winning goals.  Justin Ricketts is next on the team with his two goals, one assist, five points, and one game-winning goals.  Preston Moll, Noah Ross, and Kristoffer Brown each have scored two goals this season.  Adrian Fontanelli leads the team with his four assists and Sylus Sells and Bryan Manriquez each have two assists.  Emmanuel Padilla has a 0.00 goals against average with a 1.000 saves percentage, and 21 saves while posting 5.5 shutouts in goal for Chico State.  Tyler Shaw and Lucas Bost each have seen time in goal for the Wildcats and have a combined one save in 33 minutes of action. This meeting between the two teams will be a non-conference contest.  The two teams will face each other again in Chico on Thursday, November 2 at 11:30am in both teams' regular season finale.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Chico State leads the all-time series with the Warriors 19-8-2 including winning the last six matches in a row.  The Wildcats won 2-0 last season in Turlock on October 9, 2022.  The last Stan State victory was 1-0 on October 4, 2015, in Chico.  The Warriors last won in Turlock on October 19, 2014, 1-0.
