Warriors Finish Weekend with 2-1 Thrilling Victory over Saint Martin’s

SANTA BARBARA----  Stan State junior transfer Edgar Castaneda scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off a ball from Finn Hoffmann in the 78th minute to give the Warriors the 2-1 lead which proved to be the final in this afternoon's non-conference match-up at The Heritage Club Classic in Santa Barbara.

FIRST HALF:  Stan State had a couple of chances in the beginning of the match to take the lead including two by Tyler Tipton and one by Luis Flores in the ninth minute, but all three were stopped by the Saints' Nick Mueller.  In the 22nd minute, the Warriors were fouled in the box and Tipton made the Saints pay connecting on the penalty kick for his second goal in as many matches this season.  The Warriors had a chance to double the lead, but Edgar Castaneda's shot was stopped by Mueller in the 26th minute. Tipton had a chance for his third goal of the season when his shot on goal was snapped by Saint Martin's goalkeeper.  With just three minutes left in the half, Saint Martin's (0-2) had chance to tie the match, but the Warriors' Robby Rosas recorded the save to send match into the half with Stan State (1-1) leading 1-0.

SECOND HALF:  It looked like the Saints were going to tie the match early in the new half, but Rosas came up big with another save in the 50th minute.  Luis Flores looked like he was going to double the lead for Stan State but Mueller recorded another save.  Stan State had another chance to double its lead stopped in the 65thminute, this time off the foot of Chase Koptieff.  With 17 minutes left in regulation, Saint Martin's was fouled in the box and Diego Andrade connected on the penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1.  Stan State retook the lead, 2-1, four minutes later as Castenada connected on a ball from Finn Hoffman.  Rosas stopped the Saints' Brian Licana from tying the match for Saint Martin's late in regulation as the Warriors took the 2-1 victory.
