SANTA BARBARA---- Stan State junior transfer
Edgar Castaneda scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off a ball from
Finn Hoffmann in the 78
th minute to give the Warriors the 2-1 lead which proved to be the final in this afternoon's non-conference match-up at The Heritage Club Classic in Santa Barbara.
FIRST HALF: Stan State had a couple of chances in the beginning of the match to take the lead including two by
Tyler Tipton and one by
Luis Flores in the ninth minute, but all three were stopped by the Saints' Nick Mueller. In the 22
nd minute, the Warriors were fouled in the box and Tipton made the Saints pay connecting on the penalty kick for his second goal in as many matches this season. The Warriors had a chance to double the lead, but
Edgar Castaneda's shot was stopped by Mueller in the 26
th minute. Tipton had a chance for his third goal of the season when his shot on goal was snapped by Saint Martin's goalkeeper. With just three minutes left in the half, Saint Martin's (0-2) had chance to tie the match, but the Warriors'
Robby Rosas recorded the save to send match into the half with Stan State (1-1) leading 1-0.
SECOND HALF: It looked like the Saints were going to tie the match early in the new half, but Rosas came up big with another save in the 50
th minute.
Luis Flores looked like he was going to double the lead for Stan State but Mueller recorded another save. Stan State had another chance to double its lead stopped in the 65
thminute, this time off the foot of
Chase Koptieff. With 17 minutes left in regulation, Saint Martin's was fouled in the box and Diego Andrade connected on the penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1. Stan State retook the lead, 2-1, four minutes later as Castenada connected on a ball from Finn Hoffman. Rosas stopped the Saints' Brian Licana from tying the match for Saint Martin's late in regulation as the Warriors took the 2-1 victory.
STATS: Robby Rosas had five saves in goal for the Warriors en route to the victory. Stan State out-shot the Saints 14-9 including 9-6 in shot on goal attempts. The victors held a 6-5 corner kick advantage.
FIRST VICTORY AT HIS ALMA MATER: First-year head coach
John Powell picked up his first win as the helm of his alma mater's men's soccer team. Powell, who is in his fourth season overall coaching, is 27-19-3 in four seasons. He came to Stan State from Northwest Nazarene where he led the Nighthawks to a NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance.
HERITAGE CLUB CLASSIC: Stan State finished 1-1 (2-1 loss to Simon Fraser and 2-1 win over Saint Martin's. Simon Fraser was 2-0 (2-1 win over Stan State and 2-0 win over Simon Fraser). Saint Martin's also was 1-1 with a 1-0 win over Westmont and a 2-1 loss to Stan State. The hosts, Westmont, went 0-2 (1-0 loss to Sant Martin's and a 2-0 loss to Simon Fraser).
UP NEXT: The Warriors continue their season beginning four-game road trip on Thursday, September 7 with a 7pm match-up at Azusa Pacific. The road trip will continue Wednesday, September 13 with a 7pm match-up at Fresno Pacific. Their home opener will be on Saturday, September 16 at 7pm versus Hawai'i Pacific.
