TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State finished its play in the Stanislaus State Volleyball Tournament 3-1 after a sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds in the final match of the tournament at The Fitzpatrick Arena. All-Tournament honoree,
Emily Vander Weide had a .500 hitting percentage with a match 11 kills to go with her three total blocks to lead the Warriors.
FIRST SET: The first set was back and forth until the Warriors recorded four straight points including one on a kill by
Emily Vander Weide to give them a 19-15 lead. Fresno Pacific (1-3) cut the Warrior lead to 21-19, but the hosts scored four of the final seven points to take the set 25-22 capped by a kill by
Autumn Kirby.
SECOND SET: An
Ellison Weaver kill off an assist from Eyriana Eatman gave Stan State an early 7-3 lead in the second set. Fresno Pacific came right back and took a 10-9 lead on an ace by Cambria Waites. The hosts took a 20-17 lead on a combined block by Vander Weide and Kirby. Fresno Pacific scored five of the next six points to take a 22-21 lead. The Warriors scored the set's final four points capped by a Vander Weide kill off a pass from
Isabella Saucedo to take set two, 25-22, and to take a 2-0 lead.
THIRD SET: Once again, the third set was back and forth until the Warriors took a 14-10 lead. A kill by the Sunbird's Corinne Acosta cut the hosts' lead to 18-17. Fresno Pacific tied the match at 20-20 on a kill by Catie Speas. Four consecutive kills from the Warriors (two by
Samaya Royal, one by Kirby and one by Saucedo) with assists from
Gabby Rawson and
Haley Burdo gave the hosts a 24-20 lead. Fresno Pacific would not go away as the Sunbirds cut the Stan State lead to 24-22. A kill by Vander Weide off a pass from Burdo gave the Warriors the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
LEADERS: Emily Vander Weide led Stan State with 11 kills and three total blocks.
Haley Burdo had two service aces to go with her 21 assists.
Gabby Rawson had a match high 20 digs to lead the way for the Warriors.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Western Oregon's Madison Hornback was the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Joining Hornback on the All-Tournament Team were:
Emily Vander Weide (Stan State), Brooke Ono (Chico State), Bailee Hartsook (Western Oregon), Maya McClellan (Academy of Art), Corrinne Acosta (Fresno Pacific), and Jazmyne Walker (Western New Mexico).
RECORDS OF PARTICIPATING TEAMS: Western Oregon finished undefeated at the tournament at 4-0 while Stan State and Chico State were 3-1. Fresno Pacific and Academy of Art went 1-3 and Western New Mexico was 0-4.
UP NEXT: Stan State will travel to the Last Frontier, September 7-9, to participate in the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Warriors will face Lander University on Thursday, September 7 at 4pm (AT), Biola on Friday, September 8 at 11am (AT), Alaska Anchorage at 10am (AT) and Alaska Fairbanks at 7:30p (AT) on Saturday, September 9.
