Stan State Defeats Raiders, 2-1, in Home Opener

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State scored two unanswered goals (one in each half) to key its 2-1 victory in the Warriors' 2023 home opener over the visiting Southern Oregon Raiders.  Marivic Lek-Miro and Kayla Perez each scored the hosts' goals while Stan State outshot its guests 21-9.

FIRST HALF:  Stan State had the first shot on goal of the match in the fourth minute off the foot of Makeila Yancey but it was stopped by the Raiders' Ashlynn Hernandez. In the 14th minute, it looked like the hosts were going to take the early 1-0 lead but Hernandez snagged Aliah Avila's shot on goal attempt.  One minute later, Southern Oregon (3-3) took the 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Kaylah Breese.  The Warriors didn't trail for long as Marivic Lek-Miro hit a shot past the goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1 in the 20th minute.  Stan State had a couple of chances in the fifteen minutes to take the lead including in the 36th minute when Hernandez stopped Kaley Miller's attempt.  The hosts had another chance stopped by Hernandez in the final minutes of the half, this time off the foot of Ycela Ochoa to send the match into the half tied at 1-1.

SECOND HALF:  Three minutes into the new half, Stan State (1-1-1) took the 2-1 lead on unassisted goal by Kayla Perez.  The Raiders had a chance to tie the match in the 54th minute when Natalia Ochoa stopped Kaylah Breese's shot on goal attempt. Lek-Miro looked like she was going to score her second goal of the match in the 74th minute when Hernandez made another save.  One minute later, Ochoa made her second save of the evening stopping Frida Vargas' shot on goal attempt.  In the final minutes of the match, Alexia Brewah saw her attempt to double the Warrior lead be snagged by the Raiders' keeper as the match ended in Stan State 2-1 victory.

STATS: Stan State outshot the Raiders 21-9 including 10-4 in shot on goal attempts.  Natalia Ochoa recorded three saves in goal for the Warriors all in the second half.  Southern Oregon held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
