TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State won his fifth straight match this evening in its 3-2 home conference victory over Sonoma State at Warrior Stadium. With the win, the Warriors move into second place in the CCAA standings with just three matches left in the regular season.
Kaley Miller assisted on two of the Warriors' goals while
Kellyann Rodriguez,
Jocelin Roa, and
Aliah Avila each scored goals for the hosts.
FIRST HALF: Stan State (8-5-2, 5-3 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead on
Kellyann Rodriguez' second goal of the season in the sixth minute of the first half. The Warriors didn't have that lead for long as Sonoma State tied the match in the 14
th minute when Hailey Freeman scored off a double assist from Mia Solorio-Smith and Kayleigh Acree.
Jocelin Roa gave the hosts the lead back in the 17
th minute off a pass from
Kaley Miller. The hosts had a chance to increase their lead in the 18
th minute, but Roa's shot was stopped by the Seawolves' Ariana Beddoes. It looked like the Warriors were going to double their lead in the 39
th minute, but
Sabrina Cabrera's shot attempt hit the woodwork and the second one was stopped by the visitors' defense as the match went into halftime with Stan State leading 2-1.
SECOND HALF: Sonoma State (5-6-4, 3-4-1 CCAA) looked like the Seawolves were going to tie the match early in the half when
Natalia Ochoa stopped Hailey Freeman's shot on goal attempt. Four minutes later, Stan State increased its lead to 3-1 on
Aliah Avila's seventh goal of the season off
Kaley Miller's second assist of the match. The Seawolves cut the Warrior lead to 3-2 in the 64
th minute when Takoah Castillo scored off a ball from Mia Solorio-Smith.
Marivic Lek-Miro had a chance to tie the match at 3-3 for Sonoam with ten minutes left, but the Warrior defense stopped the shot on goal attempt as Stan State took the 3-2 victory.
SECOND PLACE: With its 3-2 victory this evening, Stan State moved into second place in the CCAA standings with 15 points with three matches left in the regular season. The Warriors are just two points out of first place (No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona's 17 points). Rounding out the top six heading into this weekend are 3.) Cal State Los Angeles and Cal Poly Humboldt each with 13 points; 5.) Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State East Bay, and Cal State San Bernardino all tied with 11 points. Just one point out of fifth are Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State each with ten points followed by Chico State in eleventh with nine points.
The top six teams at the end of the regular season on November 7 will receive a bid to the CCAA Soccer Championships, Nov. 10, 15-17. The first round will be held on November 10 at the sites of the number three and four seeds. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye. The semi-finals are set for November 15 in Arcata, Calif., on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt. The championship match will take place on November 17 at 11:00 a.m. in Arcata, Calif.
UP TO FIVE: Stan State won its fifth straight victory this evening with its 3-2 win over Sonoma State. The Warriors have not lost since losing 2-1 at Cal State Monterey Bay on October 11. The two goals scored by Sonoma State this evening were the most since that 2-1 loss to the Otters on October 11. The Warriors had their four shutout streak snapped in the 3-2 victory.
A BUNCH OF NUMBERS: Aliah Avila scored her team leading seventh goal and sixth game-winning goal this season this evening. Of Avila's seven goals, five are in CCAA matches including four game-winners.
