Men’s Soccer Battles with No. 2 Cal State Los Angeles

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State battled with the No. 2 ranked Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles this afternoon at Warrior Stadium.  Sammy Villanueva connected on a cross from Edgar Castaneda for the hosts' goal in the 58th minute.  The Golden Eagles scored two unanswered goals in the 60th minute (Erick Alamo) and the 77th minute (Oscar Warne) for the 2-1 road conference victory.

FIRST HALF:  The Warriors came out on fire in the first minutes of the match as both Landon Leal Ruiz and Sammy Villanueva had chances to give the hosts the lead, but their shots went wide of the goal.  Stan State's Angel Ruiz-Hernandez recorded the first of his season high saves stopping Rene Cortez's attempt in the 19th minute.  The hosts had another chance for the lead, but Diego Bravo stopped Kenneth Solares' shot on goal attempt in the 28th minute.  Stan State had one final chance in the half to take the lead, but Alecxander Cuellar's shot went right of the goal in the 31st minute.  Neither team recorded a shot attempt in the final fifteen minutes of the half as the match went into the half scoreless.

SECOND HALF:  Stan State's keeper made another save just two minutes into the half when he stopped Roei Mordechay's shot on goal attempt.  He made another save in the 56th minute stopping Kento Tani's attempt.  One minute later after Ruiz-Hernandez's save, the Warriors took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Sammy Villanueva off a cross from Edgar Castaneda.  Cal State Los Angeles (6-0-2, 1-0-1 CCAA) tied the match at 1-1 in the 60th minute as Erick Alamo connected on a ball from Mordechay.  The Golden Eagles had two chances to take the lead in the 65th minute when the Warrior keeper made two saves stopping Mordechay's and Oscar Cardenas' shot on goal attempts.  The guests took the 2-1 lead when Oscar Warne scored on a ball from Cardenas in the 77th minute.  The Warriors didn't record a shot attempt in the final minutes as Cal State Los Angeles took the 2-1 victory.

FIVE/TWO:  Edgar Castaneda recorded his team leading fifth assist of the season on a cross to Sammy Villanueva for the Warriors' goal in the 58th minute.  Castaneda is tied for the team lead in scoring with Alecxander Cuellar each with seven points.  Villanueva's goal was his second of the season.

ONE POINT:  Stan State earned one point this weekend in its first two CCAA matches of 2024.  The Warriors played to a scoreless tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday evening. 

SEASON HIGH SEVEN:  Angel Ruiz-Hernandez had a season high seven saves this afternoon in goal for the Warriors.  He finished with twelve for the weekend to give him 34 for the season.  The junior keeper has a 1.22 goals against average with a .756 saves percentage, and three shutouts. 

UP NEXT:  Stan State (4-3-2, 0-1-1 CCAA) returns to the road for a pair of CCAA matches, October 11 and 13.  The Warriors will be in Seaside, Calif., for a 4:30 p.m. match with Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, October 11.  They will finish the weekend with a 11:30 a.m. match at San Francisco State on Sunday, October 13.  Stan State returns home for a 4:30 p.m. match with Cal Poly Humboldt on Student Affairs Night on Thursday, October 17 at Warrior Stadium.
