TURLOCK, Calif.--- Despite the trio of
Jeremiah Jones,
Jonathan Tchengang, and
William Chavarin combining for 42 points, Stan State lost 66-62 to Academy of Art in an early season NCAA Division II West Regional non-conference game at Stan State's Fitzpatrick Arena. Tchengang and Jones each had 15 points while Chavarin chipped in 12 points for the hosts.
FIRST HALF: Jeremiah Jones' lay-up eight minutes into the game gave Stan State (3-3) an early 12-8 lead. The Warriors increased their lead to 15-10 on a
Jason Zimmer trey off a
Jordan Smith assist mid-way through the first half. Academy of Art, who has made the NCAA Division II Tournament the past three straight seasons, outscored the Warriors 11-3 in the next seven minutes to take a 21-18 lead.
Fabian Reichstadt's lay-up with twenty-seconds left in the half off a
Jeremiah Jones assist gave the Warriors a 30-26 lead heading into the half. They finished the half outscoring the Urban Knights 12-5.
SECOND HALF: William Chavarin's jumper off a
Fabian Reichstadt pass to start the half gave Stan State its largest lead of the game 32-26. Academy of Art (3-3) went on a 10-0 run capped by a Treylon Payne trey gave the guests a 36-32 lead at the 15:51 mark of the second half. Stan State came right back with a 10-0 run of its own to take a 42-36 capped by a
Jeremiah Jones' tip-in. Robbie Armbrester's tip-in capped a 17-2 run by Academy of Art as the Urban Knights took their largest lead of the game, 53-44, with just seven minutes left in regulation. The Warriors came right back with a 13-3 run of their own as they took a 57-56 lead with 2:29 on the clock. Academy of Art held the Warriors scoreless in the next two minutes to take a 63-57 lead. A trey by Chavarin off a
Jonathan Tchengang cut the Warrior deficit to 63-60 with 21 ticks left in the game. Payne was fouled and both of his free throws to increase Academy of Art's lead to 65-60. Jones' tip-in cut the deficit to a one-possession game, but Isaiah Williams was fouled and made one of his two free throws to seal the 66-62 victory for Academy of Art.
JT CAREER NIGHT: Jonathan Tchengang scored a career high 15 points on six-for-15 shooting from the field including going three-for-four from beyond the arc. He grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded three steals in 27 minutes.
15/12: Jeremiah Jones added 15 points for the Warriors as he went six-for-15 from the field and three-for-four from the line. He grabbed seven rebounds to go with his six assist and three steals.
William Chavarin added 12 points in his first start of the season. He was four-for-eight from the field and connected on three of his attempts from three-point land. Chavarin recorded two steals, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out one assist.
FOURTH STRAIGHT: For the fourth straight game, Stan State had single digits in turnovers. This afternoon, the Warriors tied their season high with 15 assists and only turned the ball over eight times. Leading the way was
Jeremiah Jones with six assists and one turnover.
Cameron Walker had three assists and no turnover with
Jonathan Tchengang and
Jordan Smith each with two assists and one turnover.
William Chavarin and
Fabian Reichstadt combined for two assists and one turnover.
14: The Warrior defense forced 14 turnovers by Academy of Art including nine by steals.
Jonathan Tchengang and
Jeremiah Jones each had three assists with
William Chavarin recording two and
Jordan Smith one. They held Academy of Art to just 28% shooting from three-point land including just 12% in the first half. The Warriors also held the Urban Knights to their lowest scoring output of the season. They were averaging 80.3 points per game entering today's game.
CCAA OPENER: Stan State finishes its three-game home stand this Saturday, November 30 with a 3:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off with Cal State Monterey Bay at The Fitz. This will be both teams' CCAA opener. The Otters are currently in San Rafael, Calif., taking on Dominican. They enter tonight's game 1-2. After Saturday, Stan State will begin a six-game road trip to end the 2024 calendar year. The Warriors will face Cal State Los Angeles (Thurs., Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Sat., Dec. 7 at 3:00 p.m.) in Southern California. After that, Stan State will have its second exhibition game of the season at the University of San Francisco at 7:00 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 11. The Warriors will then travel to Seaside, Calif., for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled conference game with Cal State Monterey Bay on Sat., Dec. 21.
