Men’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series from Otters After 69-68 Road Overtime Victory

SEASIDE, Calif.---  William Chavarin's two free throws with three seconds left in overtime gave the visiting Stan State Warriors a 69-68 victory over the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this afternoon in a CCAA match-up in Seaside, Calif.  Chavarin finished with a career high 18 points and was one of three Warriors to score in double figures.  Cameron Walker added 12 points and Jason Cibull chipped in 11 points for the victors.

FIRST HALF:  Cal State Monterey Bay built an early 11-5 in the first six minutes of the game.  Jonathan Tchengang's two free throws capped a mini 4-0 run by the Warriors as they cut the Otter lead to 11-9.  The Otters went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-9 lead mid-way through the first half.  Jason Cibull's three off a pass from William Chavarin gave the visitors a 19-17 lead with just five minutes to go in the first stanza.  Stan State took a 22-19 lead on a trey by Jason Zimmer off a pass from Cameron Walker at the 3:18 mark.  Cal State Monterey Bay (3-6, 0-4 CCAA) finished the half outscoring its guests 7-3 to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room.

SECOND HALF:  Joey Bilello's three capped a 17-7 run by the Otters to begin the second half as CSUMB took a 43-32 in the first eight minutes of the second half.  Stan State (5-5, 2-2 CCAA) followed that with a 22-6 run to take a 54-46 lead with just 1:45 left in regulation.  The Otters didn't go away as they cut Stan State's lead to 56-555 on a Jason Tengan lay-up with 31 ticks on the clock.  Jason Cibull made two free throws on the Warriors' next possession to increase their lead to 58-55.  CSUMB once again cut the guests' lead to just one (58-57) as Bilello went one-for-two from the line on its next possession.  Stan State's Cameron Walker went one-for-two from the line as he was fouled to give Stan State a 59-57 lead with 15 seconds left in regulation.  With just two seconds, Bilello's jumper sent the game into overtime tied at 59-59.

OVERTIME:  The hosts took a 64-61 lead on a trey by Joey Bilello with 3:55 to go in the overtime period.  Jonathan Tchengang's jumper off a steal by William Chavarin and a pass from Fabian Reichstadt capped a 6-0 run by Stan State as the Warriors took a 67-64 lead with just 87 seconds to go in overtime.  Bilello scored the game's next four points to give CSUMB a 68-67 lead with 26 seconds on the clock.  Stan State took a time out and drew up a play and Chavarin was fouled and calmly made both free throws as the guests took a 69-68 lead in the final seconds of overtime.  CSUMB had a chance to win the game but didn't get a shot off as the buzzer sounded and Stan State took the 69-68 victory.

SERIES SWEEP:  Stan State swept the season series from Cal State Monterey Bay this season.  The Warriors won the first meeting 90-79 in Turlock on November 30.  After winning 69-68 in overtime this afternoon, Stan State swept the season series.  The Warriors have won the last three meetings with the Otters.  This is the first time they have won in Seaside since an 82-70 victory on January 5, 2019.  This was also the last time; Stan State swept the season series.

WARRIORS' BENCH:  Stan State outscored the Otters' bench 24-21 lead by Jason Cibull's 11 points.  Mahda Fallay added eight points and Fabian Reichstadt chipped in five points. 

DEFENSE:  The Warriors held CSUMB to just 44% shooting from the field including 33% shooting from beyond the arc for the game.  In the second half, Stan State held the Otters to just 36% shooting from the field including just 33% from three-point land.  The Warriors' defense forced 21 turnovers by their opponent and turned them into 24 points.  Of those 21 turnovers, eight came from steals (three by William Chavarin, two by Cameron Walker, and one each by Jordan Smith, Jonathan Tchengang, and Mahda Fallay).

CAREER NIGHT:  William Chavarin scored a career high 18 points this afternoon.  He went four-for-15 from the field but was 10-for-13 from the charity stripe.  Chavarin dished out a career high four assists to go with his career high three steals with no turnovers.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will finish the month of December with its third and final exhibition game of the season on Sunday, December 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Sacramento State.  The Warriors will return home to The Fitzpatrick Arena for a pair of CCAA games on January 2 and 4.  They will host Cal Poly Humboldt at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2 and Chico State at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4 on City of Turlock Day.
