TURLOCK, Calif.— In both teams' California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener, it was the visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills taking the series opener from the Stan State Warriors 10-2 this evening at Warrior Field. The Toros hit five home runs with two coming off the bat of Trey Winget.
Patrick Sweeney pitched three scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits and striking out five.
Stan State (4-5-1, 0-1 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in its half of the second inning.
Alex Solis had a lead-off single and went to third on a
Flavio Perez double down the left field line. With one out, Solis scored on a successful sacrifice fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by
Mac Cabero. The Warriors doubled their lead when Perez scored on a wild pitch.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-6, 1-0 CCAA) took a 3-2 lead on a one-out three-run home run down the left field line by Noah Karliner in the top of the third inning. The Toros increased their lead to 4-0 on a lead-off solo home run to right field by Trey Winget.
The visitors broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning capped by a two-out three-run home run by Emilio Barrera to increase their lead to 10-2.
The Warriors had a chance to cut into their deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Cabero walked and went to second on a two-out single by
Jacob Baker.
Chris Catalano walked to load the bases. The Toro reliever, Derek Ryan, induced the next Warrior batter to ground out to third base to end the Warrior scoring threat.
Stan State had one more chance to cross home plate in its half of the ninth inning. Cabero and
Danny Murphy had back-to-back one-out walks. Baker reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop which Murphy was out on second. With two outs, Catalano walked to load the bases for the hosts. CSUDH's Tyler Moniz-Witten induced the final Warrior to line out to left to preserve the 10-2 Toro victory.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Will Crookham (2-2) suffered the loss for the Warriors.

WARRIOR HITTERS: The Warriors had just three hits with one hit apiece by
Alex Solis,
Flavio Perez, and
Jacob Baker. Cabero drove in a run and Solis and Perez scored the Warriors' two runs.
UP NEXT: Stan State will continue its four-game CCAA series with the Toros tomorrow, Saturday, February 24 for a 1pm starting doubleheader. The two teams will conclude the series with a noon starting series finale on Sunday, February 25.
