Softball Drops Two in Day Two of Concordia Kickoff Classic

iRVINE, Calif.--- Playing against two of the top teams in the West Region, Stan State lost 4-2 to No. 14 Concordia Irvine and 8-1 (five innings) to Western Washington this afternoon in Day Two of the Concordia Kickoff Classic in Irvine.  
 
VERSUS CONCORDIA-IRVINE:  The Warriors' first game of the day was at No. 14 Concordia Irvine (3-1).  The game was scoreless until the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Sarah Warden reached on a lead-off single.  She was out when Marissa Cerda reached on a fielder's choice.  Cerda later scored on a two-out single by Payton Applequist.  
 
The Warriors held the Golden Eagles scoreless with Victoria Alarcon in the circle.  The nationally ranked hosts scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning capped by a two-out two-run home run by Kendall Flatt. 
 
Stan State (0-3) had a chance to cut into the hosts' lead in its half of the sixth inning.  With two outs, Sasha Martello walked and went to second on an Applequist single.  Cerda singled to load the bases, but Golden Eagle reliever Courtney Koelman induced the next Warrior to ground out to end the scoring threat.
 
The Warriors made it interesting in their half of the seventh.  Katie Thornsberry had a lead-off single and went to second when Mikaela Ferreira was hit by a pitch.  Karli DalBianco drove home Thornsberry with a run scoring single up the middle.  Koelman struck out the next two Warrior batters and induced the last batter to fly out to right field to preserve the 4-2 Concordia victory.
 
HITTING:  Payton Applequist was three-for-three with a run batted in while six other Warriors had one hit apiece.  
 
PITCHING:  Victoria Alarcon (0-1) picked up the loss in the start.  She pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and four runs.  Sasha Martello pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.
 
VERUS WESTERN WASHINGTON:  The Vikings took a 5-0 lead with a five run second inning on four hits and two Warrior errors.  The key hit of the inning was a two-run one-out single by Hailey Rath. Western Washington (3-0) added a run in the third to take a 6-0 lead. 
 
Stan State cut the deficit to 6-1 on a two-out run scoring single by Sarah Warden which scored Faith Erb
 
The Vikings took an 8-1 lead on a two-run fourth inning.  They added another run on a sacrifice fly by Rath in their half of the fifth to increase their lead to 9-1.  Alli Kimball (2-0) held the Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to take the 9-1 non-conference victory.
 
 HITTING:  Five Warriors had one hit apiece in Mikaela Ferreira, Sarah Warden, Payton Applequist, Noelany Ramirez, and Faith Erb.  Warden drove in the Warriors' run which scored Erb.
 
PITCHING:  Shelby Frutoz (0-2) suffered the loss in the start, pitching two innings, giving up five hits and six runs (one earned), striking out one and walking three.  Sasha Martello pitched the final three innings of relief.
