TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State was trailing 4-1 after three complete innings and used a six-run fourth inning to key its 12-6 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Chico State Wildcats (11-6, 6-6 CCAA) this afternoon at Warrior Field in Turlock, Calif.
Austin Balentine (3-0) picked up the victory with six innings of relief pitching. The Warriors pounded out 16 hits including five players with multiple-hit games in
Chris Catalano (four-for-five, two home runs),
Luke Davies (three-for-five, triple),
Kyle Rachels (three-for-five, double, triple), and
Alex Solis (two-for-five).
Chico State took a 4-0 lead with a four-run third inning keyed by a one-out bases clearing double by Daniel Vierra. The Warriors cut into the Wildcat lead in their half of the third.
Luke Davies had a lead-off triple and scored on a JD Madrigral sacrifice fly.
Stan State (8-10-1, 4-6 CCAA) scored six runs in its half of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
Chris Catalano,
Alex Solis, and
Kyle Rachels led off the inning with three consecutive singles.
Tyler Van Dyk drove in Catalano with a single through the left side. With one out, Davies drove home Solis and Rachels to tie the game at 4-4. Madrigal hit the third pitch he saw for a run scoring single and bring in Van Dyk and give Stan State a 5-4 lead. Davies and Madrigal advanced a base on a wild pitch. Davies scored on a
Robert Valdivia sacrifice fly. Madrigal scored the Warriors' sixth run of the game on a Catalano single as the Warriors took a 7-4 heading into the final six innings of the game.
The Warriors added two insurance runs in their half of the sixth inning.
Danny Murphy had a one-out infield single and scored on a one-out two-run home run by Catalano to increase the hosts' lead to 9-4.
They added another run in the seventh to take a 10-4 lead. Rachels had a lead-off double and went to third on a wild pitch. Van Dyk walked to place runners on the corners. With one out, Rachels scored on a Davies' single.
Stan State added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase its lead to 12-4.
With one out, Catalano hit a home run down the left field line for his second of the game and third of the season. Rachels had a two-out triple to right center. Van Dyk walked and
Flavio Perez singled home Rachels for Stan State's twelfth run of the game.
The Wildcats scored two runs in their final at bat to make the final 12-6.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had 16 hits in the series finale with four players with multiple hit games.
Chris Catalano went four-for-five with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Catalano hit two home runs.
Luke Davies went three-for-five while driving in three runs and scoring twice. He added a triple.
Kyle Rachels went three-for-five with three runs scored with a double and a triple.
Alex Solis had two hits.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Austin Balentine (3-0) took the victory in relief. He pitched six innings, giving up ten hits and two unearned runs while walking four and striking out three.
Noah Chelberg pitched 0.2 scoreless relief innings while striking out one.
UP NEXT: The Warriors return to the diamond, March 15-17, for a four-game series in series against No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay. The series will begin with a 6:00 p.m. single game on Friday, March 15. The two teams will continue the series with a 2:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 16. The series will conclude with a noon starting game on Sunday, March 17.
