ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Stan State finished its four-game road conference series with Sonoma State 2-2 after this afternoon's doubleheader split with the Seawolves in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Warriors hit three home runs and
Tony Jacob picked up the win in the Warriors' game one 7-4 victory. Sonoma State took the series finale 4-1 keyed by a two-out three-home run by Christopher Wright. The two teams split the weekend series 2-2.
GAME ONE: Stan State (13-17-1, 9-13 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning.
JD Madrigal drew a lead-off walk and scored on a two-run home run over the left field fence by
Danny Murphy.
Jacob Baker walked and went to second on a
Ryan Leonesio single. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by
Robert Valdivia. Baker scored the Warriors' third run on a wild pitch.
The Warriors added two more runs in the fifth.
Kyle Rachels drew a lead-off walk. He was out at second when
Flavio Perez reached on a fielder's choice. Perez scored on a
JD Madrigal double to right center. Madrigal advanced to third on a fly out by Murphy. He scored on a Baker single up the middle to increase the guests' lead to 5-0.
Alex Solis' solo home run with two outs increased the Warrior lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. Sonoma State cut the Warrior lead with a run in the fourth, 6-1. Stan State took a 7-1 lead on a two-out solo home run by Baker.
Sonoma State cut the Warrior lead to 7-2 on a two-out solo home run by Chris Ortiz in the bottom of the sixth. The Seawolves cut its deficit to 7-4 with a two-run ninth on a two-out two-run single by Jared Esparza.
Noah Chelberg induced the next Seawolf to fly out to right field to preserve the 7-4 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan Sate had eight hits in the victory.
Jacob Baker went two-for-three with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and a home run. Also hitting home runs for the Warriors were
Danny Murphy and
Alex Solis.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (2-4) recorded the win in the start, pitching six innings, giving up four this and two runs, striking out six and walking five.
Damian Vallejos,
Patrick Sweeney, and
Noah Chelberg combined to pitching three combined innings of relief, giving up four hits and two runs, while striking out two, and walking two.
GAME TWO: The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the series finale on lead-off solo home run by
Kyle Rachels in the top of the second inning. Sonoma State (14-15, 8-11 CCAA) tied the game, 1-1, with a run in the third.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the Seawolf half of the fifth inning. Niko Tejada drew a lead-off walk. He went to second on a Shane Callison single. With two outs, Christopher Wright hit a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence to give the hosts a 4-1 lead.
The Warriors had a chance to tie the game in their last at bat.
Alex Solis hit a one-out solo home run over the right field fence to cut the Warrior deficit to 4-2. With two outs,
JD Madrigal drew a walk and was pinch ran for by
Cooper Winton. Nick Kamages induced the last Warrior batter to fly out to right field as Sonoma State took the series finale, 4-2.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had six hits in the night cap.
Alex Solis had two of those six hits including a solo home run.
Kyle Rachels also had a solo home run while
Jerry Nix,
Jacob Baker, and
Ryan Leonesio each had a hit.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Trent Huff had the no-decision in the start. He pitched four innings, giving up three hits and a run while striking out three.
Noah Chelberg (0-2) suffered the loss in relief.
Quinn Oliver pitched the final 0.2 scoreless innings of relief for the visitors.
UP NEXT: Stan State to travel to Stockton, Calif., for a 6:30 p.m. exhibition game with the Oakland Athletics' Single A Affiliate Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. The Warriors will return home this Friday-Sunday, April 5-7 when they host Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game CCAA series.
