LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Stan State won its regular season finale 14-9 over the hosts, Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles this afternoon at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field in Los Angeles. With the win, the Warriors captured its third conference series of the season.
Stan State (19-27-1, 15-23 CCAA) scored first in the top of the first inning.
Robert Valdivia walked and later scored on a
Flavio Perez sacrifice fly to center field. The Warriors doubled their lead on a solo home run by
Kyle Rachels in the top of the third.
Cal State L.A. cut the Warrior lead in half with a run in the third inning.
The Warriors took a 10-1 lead after an eight-run fifth.
Ryan Leonesio had a lead-off single, went to second on a wild pitch. Valdivia drew his second walk of the game to place runners on first and second. Rachels drew a walk to load the bases with no one out. Leonesio scored on a wild pitch.
JD Madrigal hit a three-run home run to give the guests a 6-1 lead.
Still with no one out,
Chris Catalano drew a walk and went to second on a single by
Flavio Perez. They each advanced on a wild pitch. Catalano scored on an
Alex Solis single.
Jerry Nix drew another walk and Perez scored on a passed ball.
With one out, Leonesio drove in both Solis and Nix with a two-run double to increase the guests' lead to 10-1.
Cal State L.A. (23-27, 17-23 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead to 10-5 with a four-run fifth capped by a three-home run by Isaiah Marquez. The Golden Eagles added another run on a two-out solo home run by Elijah Jackson in the sixth.
The hosts made it a one-run ball game, 10-9 with a three-run seventh keyed by a two-run two-out double by Andrew Duran.
The Warriors scored four insurance runs to take a 14-9 lead in the eighth. Rachels had a lead-off double, went to third on a single by Madrigal. Catalano was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stan State took an 11-9 lead on a sacrifice fly by Perez which brought in Rachels. With one out, Madrigal scored on a bunt single by Solis.
Danny Murphy loaded the bases when he reached after being hit by a pitch. Catalano scored when
Jacob Baker had a run scoring bunt single. The Warriors scored their sixth run of the inning when
Luke Davies, who pinch ran for Solis, scored when Leonesio reached on a fielder's choice.
Cal State L.A. had a chance to break into the Warrior lead in the ninth, but reliever
Quinn Oliver induced the final Golden Eagle to ground out to
Jonluke Goldman at first to preserve the 14-9 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Five Stan State batters had multiple-hit games led by
Kyle Rachels who went three-for-five with a run batted in, three runs scored, and a home run and a double.
JD Madrigal drove in three runs on a home run while going two-for-five and scoring twice.
Ryan Leonesio was two-for-five with three runs batted in, a run scored, a double, and a stolen base.
Flavio Perez and
Alex Solis each had two hits, drove in two runs, and scored a run.
Jacob Baker was two-for-five with a run batted in and a stolen base.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Kody Cardoza (4-2) picked up the victory in the start, pitching 5.1 innings.
Noah Chelberg and
Quinn Oliver pitched 2.1 combined innings of scoreless relief, striking out three, walking two, and giving up a hit.
Trent Huff also pitched a 1.1 inning.
