TURLOCK, Calif. — The No. 3-ranked Stan State men's soccer team continued its historic postseason run Sunday night with a 2–0 victory over Hawai'i Hilo in the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Second Round at Warrior Stadium. With the win, the Warriors advance to the NCAA Super Region IV Third Round, where they will host No. 8 Midwestern State on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m.
The victory improved the Warriors to 17-1-1 overall — extending their school record for single-season wins — and marked their 12th shutout of the year. Stan State has now outscored opponents 44–9 this season and has yet to concede a goal in postseason play.
First Half
Stan State seized control early, striking twice in the first half to build a decisive lead. In the 24th minute,
Emmanuel Duran finished off a crisp passing sequence from
Jose Ponce and
Samuel Villanueva, scoring his 10th goal of the season to make it 1–0. Villanueva's assist was the 16th of his career, breaking the all-time Stan State record previously held by Nolan Holdridge (2009–12).
The Warriors doubled their lead in the 39th minute when
Sebastian Carbajal scored his seventh goal of the season off another perfectly placed ball from Villanueva. The assist was Villanueva's 17th career helper and his 13th of the season — extending both his school records for career and single-season assists.
Second Half
The Warriors' defense and goalkeeper
Angel Ruiz-Hernandez kept the Vulcans off the board to secure the shutout. Ruiz-Hernandez made three saves to earn his 12th clean sheet of the year, while the back line of
Ian Reis,
David Lozano,
Federico Barbieri,
Christian Brenes,
Jose Tizoc, and
Hugo Canedo locked down the Hawai'i Hilo attack, limiting the Vulcans to just four shots on goal.
