TURLOCK, Calif.--- For the second consecutive weekend, the Stan State Warriors won their weekend series. This weekend, the Warriors took two of three games from the visiting Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles including splitting today's doubleheader. Stan State took game one 3-2 in ten innings but lost 9-4 to the Golden Eagles in the series finale.
GAME ONE: Minnesota Crookston took the 2-0 lead with a two-run second inning capped by a two-out run scoring single by Sawyer Satrom. The score remained 2-0 Golden Eagles until the Warrior half of the fifth inning. With one out,
Danny Murphy walked and then
Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch. Each Warrior stole second and third. Murphy scored on a run scoring infield single by
Ryan Leonesio. The Warriors tied the game at 2-2 when
Robert Valdivia had a successful sacrifice bunt.
The game was sent to extra innings and as both teams were scoreless for the next four innings. In the Warrior tenth,
Alex Solis had a lead-off double and was pinch ran for by
Jackson Brooks.
Flavio Perez sacrificed Brooks to third. With one out, Brooks scored on an infield by
Arthur Navarette Jr., to give Stan State the 3-2 walk-off victory.
WARRIOR RELIEVERS: The four Warrior relievers of
Caleb Bertoncini,
Greyson Gregory,
Noah Chelberg, and
Zach Geiss combined to pitch eight scoreless innings of relief, while giving up two hits while striking out seven and walking seven. Geiss recorded his second straight victory in improving to 2-0. He pitched the final 0.1 scoreless inning of relief.
MULTIPLE-HITS: The trio of Warriors in
Alex Solis,
Arthur Navarette Jr., and
Ryan Leonesio combined to go six-for-eleven and drove in two runs.
GAME TWO: Stan State (5-5) took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning. With one out,
JD Madrigal was hit by a pitch and went to third on a double by
Alex Solis.
Flavio Perez drove home Madrigal with an infield single. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead on a run scoring single through the left side by Arthur Navarette, Jr.
Minnesota Crookston (1-2) cut the Warrior lead in half with a run in the top of the third inning. The Warriors took a 3-1 lead with a run in the fifth.
Robert Valdivia reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a one-out run scoring double by
JD Madrigal.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run seventh capped by a one-out single by Josh Dykhoff. They took a 5-3 lead in their half of the eighth on a two-run one-out home run by Sawyer Satrom.
The hosts cut the deficit in half, 5-4, with a run in their frame of the eighth inning.
Danny Murphy led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He scored on a double down the left field line by
Jacob Baker.
The visitors took a 9-4 lead on a two-out grand slam home run by Satrom (his second home run of the game).
Stan State had a chance to cut into the lead in its last at bat. Solis drew a lead-off walk. He went to second on a wild pitch. Navarette Jr., drew a one-out walk, but the Golden Eagles' Joey Connelly induced the last two Warriors to strike out as they took the 9-4 victory to split today's doubleheader.
EIGHT HITS: Six Warriors had at least one hit apiece in the night cap.
Jacob Baker and
Arthur Navarette Jr., each had two hits. Four Warriors each had one hit apiece in
JD Madrigal,
Alex Solis,
Flavio Perez, and
Tyler Van Dyk.
DOUBLES' LEADER: With his four doubles this weekend,
Alex Solis holds the all-time doubles lead in Warrior history in the D2ERA with 46. He is sixth all-time with 159 hits.
CCAA OPENER: Stan State will begin its CCAA season this weekend, February 21-23 with a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino. The two teams will play a 6:00 p.m. series opener on Friday, February 21. The series will continue with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader this Saturday, February 22. A week from today, the series will conclude with a noon starting series finale on Sunday, February 23. This will also end the Warriors' fourteen-game home stand. After next Sunday's series finale, the Warriors will travel to Carson, Calif., for a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills, February 28-March 2.
