TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State split its weekend opening conference series with the No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino after falling in the series finale today, 18-11. The Warriors took the series opener 7-2 and the third game of the series 5-4. Cal State San Bernardino (9-5, 2-2 CCAA) won the second game 7-2 and today's series finale.
The Yotes took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second without getting a hit. Stan State (7-7, 2-2 CCAA) took a 2-1 lead with a two-run second.
Alex Solis had a lead-off single and went to second on a one-out
Luke Davies' single.
JD Madrigal drew a walk to load the bases. Still with one out, Solis scored on a
Danny Murphy sacrifice fly. The Warriors had a successful double steal attempt.
Ryan Leonesio reached on a CSUSB fielding error which brought in Davies with Stan State's second run of the game.
Stan State took a 6-0 lead with a four-run third.
Arthur Navarette Jr. had a lead-off single and went to second when Solis drew a walk. Navarette Jr. scored on a run scoring single by
Flavio Perez. Still with no outs, pinch hitter
Tyler Van Dyk had a successful bunt single which Solis scored on a Yote throwing error. Perez scored on a
JD Madrigal sacrifice fly. Van Dyk scored on a successful sacrifice bunt by Murphy to give Stan State a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors didn't hold the lead for long as the Yotes scored six runs on just one hit a grand slam home run by Dom Dominguez as they took a 7-6 lead. The guests took a 14-7 lead after a seven run fifth inning.
Stan State cut the deficit to 14-7 in its half of the fifth. Solis and Perez had back-to-bask lead-off singles. With one out, Solis scored on a Madrigal sacrifice fly. The Yotes came right back with a two-run sixth to increase their lead to 16-7.
Solis hit a solo home run to lead-off the Warrior seventh as they cut the Yote lead to 16-9. CSUSB made it 18-9 Yotes with a two-run ninth. The Warriors didn't go away as they made it interesting in their last at bat. With one out, Navarette Jr., had a single and scored on a two-run two-out home run by Perez. Van Dyk had a two-out single and went to second when
Austin Sargent was hit by a pitch. He scored on a
Jonluke Goldman single to make the final 18-11 CSUSB.
14 HITS: Stan State had 14 hits in the series finale with the Coyotes.
Flavio Perez and
Alex Solis went a combined six-for-eight, driving in four runs, and scoring six runs. Perez had a two-run home run and Solis had a solo home run.
Tyler Van Dyk went two-for-four with two runs scored while
Arthur Navarette Jr., when two-for-five with two runs scored.
SEVEN: Arthur Navarette Jr. ran his hitting streak to seven while
Flavio Perez has a five-game hitting streak.
Ryan Leonesio has reached base safely in all 14 of the Warriors' first games.
Robert Valdivia has reached base safely in the last twelve and Perez the last nine.
UP NEXT: Stan State will be on the road for the first time this season when the Warriors travel to Carson, Calif., for a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills. The series will begin with a 2:00 p.m. single game this Friday, February 28. The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday, March 1. The series will conclude with an 11:00 a.m. starting game a week from today, Sunday, March 2. The Toros enter this weekend with a 7-6 overall record and a 3-1 CCAA record after taking three out of four games from the hosts, Cal State San Marcos Cougars.
