BUCKEYE, Ariz.--- The Stan State Warriors, who are ranked No. 29 in the nation according to the most recent SCOREBOARD/NCAA Division II Men's Golf rankings powered by clippd, shot a 14-over par 302 this afternoon in the first round of the three-round The Stack Cougar-Burro Collegiate.
Jack Peters shot a one-under par 71 to lead the way for the Warriors to sit in a nine-way tie for ninth place at the par-72 Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz.
WARRIORS: Jack Peters began his day with a 35 on the first nine holes this morning. Peters shot a 36 on the back nine to finish with his one-under par 71. He is in a nine-way tie for sixth place and is three strokes behind leader Colorado Christian's Adam Duncan's four-under par 68. Sitting in an eleven-way tie for 33
rd place is
Chase Bird with a four-over par 76. Bird shot a 37 followed by a 39 to finish with a 76. One stroke behind Bird with his five-over par 77 (41-36) is
Chris Chomyn. The senior Warrior is in an eight-way tie for 44
th place. Sitting in a seven-way tie for 52
nd place are
Nate Jetton and
Ricky Sullivan each with a six-over par 78. Jetton shot a 43 and a 35 while Sullivan shot a 40 and a 38.
Stan State is one stroke out of seventh place (Western Washington) and five out of sixth place (Washburn). The Warriors are eight strokes behind Fort Lewis who is in fifth place. Those are the three teams that Stan State is paired with for the second round on Monday, March 24.
EAGLES/BIRDIES/PARS ANYONE: In today's first round,
Jack Peters had 11 pars and four birdies in his 18 holes.
Chase Bird had an eagle on the par five tenth hole to go with his nine pars and two birdies.
Ricky Sullivan had eleven pars and one birdie. The duo of
Chris Chomyn, who is ranked number one the West Region, and
Nate Jetton each had ten pars and two birdies.
TOP FIVE TEAMS: Colorado Christian, who is number one in the nation, shot an eleven-under par 277 to claim first place heading into the final two rounds Monday. Sitting in second place is No. 27 Colorado Mesa with the Mavericks' four-over par 292. Two strokes behind Colorado Mesa are No. 14 Cal State East Bay with its six-over par 294. After shooting a seven-over par 295 is Westminster (Utah) to sit in fourth place. Rounding out the top five after the first round is Fort Lewis with its eight-over par 296.
TOP THREE INDIVIDUALS: The trio of Colorado Christian Cougars hold the top three individual spots heading into Monday's second round. Adam Duncan, who is ranked number two in the nation, shot a four-under par 68 in the first 18 holes. Shooting a three-under par 69 is Xavier Bighaus, who is ranked fifth in the nation). The one ranked golfer in NCAA Division II is Sungyeep Cho who shot a two-under par 70 to sit in a three-way tie for third place with teammate Sangha Park and Colorado Mesa's Cole Beyer.
FINAL TWO ROUNDS' TEE-TIMES: The Second Round of The Stack Cougar-Burro Collegiate will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz., with the Warriors starting at 11:36 a.m.
Ricky Sullivan will be the first Warrior to start the second round. At 11:46 a.m.,
Nate Jetton will tee off followed by
Chris Chomyn at 11:56 a.m.
Chase Bird will begin his second round at 12:06 p.m. followed by
Jack Peters at 12:26 p.m. The Warriors will be paired with Western Washington University, Washburn University, and Fort Lewis College.
The final round will start around 7:30 a.m. at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz. The Golf Club of Estrella is the same course that hosted the Hot Dirt Desert Shootout on Friday, which Stan State tied for sixth place with a two-over par 578 with Colorado School of Mines.
UP NEXT: After Tuesday's final round, Stan State will host the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational which will be the 50
th year of the invitational April 14-15. The first day of the tournament which will be 36 holes will be at Merced Golf & Country Club in Merced, Calif. The final 18 holes will be played at Turlock Golf & Country Club in Turlock, Calif. Both days will start at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
