TURLOCK, Calif.--- Rocco Gurrola (2-2) pitched a five-hit complete game in Stan State's game one 8-1 victory of today's doubleheader with the visiting Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles.
Flavio Perez went four-for-five with two runs batted in and a run scored for the victors. The Warriors lost the night cap 5-4 to the Golden Eagles despite
Jacob Baker's three-run home run.
GAME ONE: Today's opener was scoreless until the Warrior half of the third.
Arthur Navarette Jr. led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He stole second and scored on a one-out double by
Flavio Perez. The Warriors doubled their lead with a run scoring single by
Austin Sargent. With two outs,
Danny Murphy walked to place runners on first and second. Sargent scored when
Jacob Baker reached on a two-base fielding error by the Golden Eagles. Ryan
Leonesio hit a two-out two-run single to bring in Murphy and Baker with the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.
Stan State (10-11, 5-6 CCAA) took a 7-0 lead on a one-out two-run home run by Sargent in the fourth.
Cal State Los Angeles scored its only run of the game in the sixth to cut the Warrior lead to 7-1.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the eighth to take an 8-1 lead. Navarette had a lead-off triple and scored on a Perez one-out single to left field.
Rocco Gurrola shut down the Golden Eagles in the ninth as Stan State took the opener, 8-1.
GURROLA: Rocco Gurrola pitched his first complete game as a Warrior starting pitcher. He gave up five hits and one run while striking out two and walking no one. Gurrola induced the Golden Eagles to 17 ground outs and six fly outs.
MULTIPLE-HIT: Three Warriors had multiple-hit games in the opener.
Flavio Perez went four-for-five with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Ryan Leonesio was three-for-four with two runs batted in while
Austin Sargent went two-for-five with three runs batted in, two scored, and a home run. Both Perez and Leonesio each had a double.
GAME TWO: Cal State Los Angeles (6-11, 3-4 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead on a one-out three-run home run by Gilbert Morales, his second of the season in the top of the third inning.
Stan State cut into the Golden Eagle lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Arthur Navarette Jr. drew a lead-off walk. He went to second on a ground out by
Alex Solis. Navarette stole third with two outs and scored on the errant throw to cut into the deficit, 3-1.
The Golden Eagles came right back with a run of its own on a one-out run scoring single by Morales to increase their lead to 4-1 in the fifth.
The Warriors tied the game in their half of the fifth.
Tyler Van Dyk and
Jonluke Goldman drew back-to-back lead-off walks. They scored on
Jacob Baker's first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
Cal State Los Angeles retook the lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Malik Clayton drove home Kai Penuelas with a single with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Stan State had a chance to tie or take the lead in its half of the sixth.
Flavio Perez had a one-out single and went to second when Van Dyk walked with two outs. Cal State Los Angeles' reliever Ismael Quintero induced the next Warrior to ground out to end the scoring threat.
The Warriors had another chance in their last at bat. With two outs,
Robert Valdivia walked and was pinch ran for by
Jackson Brooks. Quintero induced the final Warrior batter to ground out to preserve the Golden Eagle 5-4 victory.
SCORELESS: Quinn Oliver pitched two scoreless innings of relief this afternoon. He gave up two hits and struck out two Golden Eagles.
THREE RBIS: Jacob Baker drove in three of the Warriors' four runs today in the night cap on a home run. He was one of two Warriors with a hit with
Flavio Perez with a single.
SERIES FINALE: Stan State will look to take the series tomorrow in the series finale with the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. The finale will start at noon.
