TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State split its third conference series of the season today with a 14-1 loss to the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves. The Warriors took a 2-1 series lead after a doubleheader sweep yesterday, but the Seawolves took the series opener on Friday and the series finale this afternoon to split the weekend series.
Sonoma State (11-29, 8-24 CCAA) took advantage of three walks by the Warriors' pitching staff in the first inning and scored five runs on just three hits to take a 5-0 lead after its first at bat. The Seawolves added another run in the fourth on a two-out single by Garrett Barto. They took an 11-0 lead after a three-run seventh. Sonoma scored three more in the top of the eighth to take a 14-0 lead.
Stan State (14-22, 9-17 CCAA) scored its run in the bottom of the ninth.
Robert Valdivia had a one-out single and went to second on a two-out single by
Arthur Navarette Jr. Valdivia scored on a
Jackson Brooks single to make the final 14-1.
SWEENEY: The Warriors
Patrick Sweeney, who earlier this week was named the Stan State Department of Mathematics Most Outstanding Student of the Year for 2024-25, pitched 3.0 innings of relief, giving up five hits and a run.
MULTIPLE-HIT DAYS: Two players in
Robert Valdivia and
Jackson Brooks each had two hits in the series finale. Valdivia went two-for-five with a run scored and now has 152 career hits at Stan State. Brooks in a pinch-hit role went two-for-two with a run scoring single.
UP NEXT: Stan State will travel to Hayward, Calif., this Thursday-Saturday, April 17-19, for a four-game series with Cal State East Bay. The two teams will play a 3:00 p.m. starting game this Thursday, April 17. They will play a noon starting doubleheader this Friday, April 18. The series will conclude with a noon starting game this Saturday, April 19. The Warriors will return home April 25-27 for a four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay beginning with a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday, April 25, which will be Blue Chip Broadcasting Sponsors' Night. The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, April 26. The series will conclude on Sunday, April 27 at noon. Prior to Sunday's series finale, Stan State will recognize its twenty seniors in a ceremony on the field.
