Women's Soccer Falls to Cal State San Bernardino

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State women's soccer matched Cal State San Bernardino with 14 shots, including a 9-7 advantage in the first half, but the Coyotes capitalized on their opportunities to hand the Warriors a 4-0 setback Friday evening at Warrior Stadium. Zara Mujica recorded six saves for Stan State, which moved to 4-3-2 overall and 3-2 in CCAA play, while Cal State San Bernardino improved to 4-2-3 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-2.

First Half
Cal State San Bernardino struck just 1:23 into the match. After Mujica stopped Sakiah Williams' attempt in the opening minute, Raylene Alcaraz scored off an assist from Alissa Torres to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

Stan State responded by generating several opportunities. Haylee Sousa, Lorena Moreno and Kyndra Obermeyer each had shots blocked before Alexi Ochoa and Aliah Avila followed with attempts. Mujica kept the deficit at one with saves on Maya Alston and Reagan Parkhill.

Alcaraz struck again in the 28th minute with an unassisted goal to give Cal State San Bernardino a 2-0 lead. The Warriors continued to create chances, with Sousa putting an attempt on goal in the 42nd minute that Bella Ortiz stopped.

Stan State outshot Cal State San Bernardino 9-7 in the opening half, while the teams each earned two corner kicks. Mujica made three saves in the period.

Second Half
The Warriors continued to push forward coming out of halftime. Avila put a shot on goal in the 49th minute that Ortiz stopped and followed with another attempt three minutes later. Obermeyer added a shot in the 54th minute.  Cal State San Bernardino extended its lead in the 58th minute when Jaclyn Silva scored off Torres' second assist of the match to make it 3-0.

Mujica made second-half saves on Alston and Marianne Tarin as the Warriors continued to battle. Adalay Valdivia recorded an attempt in the 77th minute before Kayla Umana put a shot on goal in the 84th that Ortiz saved.  Valerie Garcia closed the scoring for the Coyotes in the 86th minute off an assist from Jordan Goldstein.

The teams finished even with 14 shots apiece. Cal State San Bernardino held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Mujica made six saves, three in each half.

Stan State returns to the road on Sunday, Oct. 4, when the Warriors face Cal State East Bay at 2 p.m. in Alameda at the UCSF Health Oakland Roots & Soul Performance Center. East Bay enters Sunday's match 2-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the CCAA after playing UC Merced to a 2-2 draw Friday afternoon in Alameda.

The Warriors remain on the road Friday, Oct. 9, when they face San Francisco State at noon at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. Stan State then returns to Warrior Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 11, to host UC Merced at 2 p.m. The Warriors continue their home stand on Thursday, Oct. 15, when they host No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
