TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State returned to the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena Friday evening for Mental Health Awareness Night, but the Warriors dropped a three-set decision to No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19.
Lauren Hamilton and
Fallon Freeman led Stan State with five kills apiece, while the Warriors recorded seven total blocks against the nationally ranked Broncos.
Stan State moved to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Hamilton finished with five kills on 12 attempts while hitting .333 and added four block assists. Freeman recorded five kills and three block assists, while
Sydney Hoffman had four kills and three total blocks, including one solo block.Â
Maggie Olson also finished with four kills.
Reagan Wilkerson recorded 10 assists, while
Ireland Avalos added five.
Cal Poly Pomona hit .274 with 42 kills, led by Alexia Athans, who finished with 11 kills without an error on 12 attempts for a .917 hitting percentage. Elle Walker added nine kills while hitting .615, and Sarah Ybarra also had nine kills.
First Set
Stan State battled No. 15 Cal Poly Pomona throughout the opening set before falling 25-21. The Broncos took an early 8-5 lead, but kills by Hamilton and Freeman helped the Warriors pull within 10-9. Cal Poly Pomona extended its advantage to 19-13 before Stan State made a late push.
Trailing 23-17, the Warriors scored four consecutive points, highlighted by an Olson kill, to cut the deficit to 23-21. The Broncos answered with the final two points to secure the set. Hamilton and Freeman each had three kills, while Hoffman and Olson added two apiece. Stan State hit .250 with 11 kills in the opening frame.
Second Set
Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Broncos extended their advantage to 14-3 and later 22-7. Stan State scored five of the next seven points, including a Freeman kill and a Hoffman solo block, before Cal Poly Pomona closed out the set 25-12.
The Broncos hit .333 in the frame while holding the Warriors to five kills.
Third Set
Stan State started strong in the third set, scoring the first four points behind a
Lauren Gonzales service ace and a block by Freeman and Hamilton. Cal Poly Pomona answered with four consecutive points to tie the score before eventually taking a 10-6 lead.
The Warriors battled back, using consecutive blocks involving Hamilton to even the score at 14-14. The Broncos responded with three straight points to move ahead 17-14, but Stan State pulled within 17-16 on a block by Freeman and Hoffman.
Cal Poly Pomona then scored five of the next six points to build a 22-17 advantage. Olson and Hoffman recorded late kills, but the Broncos closed out the set 25-19 to complete the sweep. Stan State recorded four total blocks in the third set, with Hamilton contributing three block assists.
