SAN FRANCISCO — Stan State closed the regular season with a 65-56 CCAA road win over San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the season series 2-0 behind three double-figure scorers in Anthony Newman-Gomez (13 points), Malachi Johnson (12) and Jason Cibull (12).
With the victory, Stan State finishes the regular season 13-15 overall and 9-13 in CCAA play, while San Francisco State concludes the year 4-25 overall and 3-19 in conference.
Stan State led 42-29 at the break after shooting 64 percent in the opening half and knocking down seven 3-pointers. SF State made a push after halftime, but the Warriors answered with timely stops and free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
First Half
SF State hit the first 3-pointer of the game, but Stan State responded immediately as Lloyd French buried a pair of triples and then converted a jumper to spark an early run.
The Warriors' perimeter shooting and defensive pressure flipped the game quickly. Stan State turned turnovers into points and built separation behind multiple 3s, including three first-half makes from Newman-Gomez. The Warriors' lead grew into double digits late in the half and Stan State went into the locker room up 42-29 after a 16-of-25 shooting performance in the period.
Second Half
SF State tightened things up defensively and trimmed the margin behind second-chance points and trips to the line. The Warriors, however, kept their composure as Johnson scored in key moments and Stan State leaned on the free-throw line late to close it out.
Stan State shot 7-of-8 at the stripe in the second half and finished 10-of-13 for the game, helping hold off the Gators' comeback attempt and seal the 65-56 final.
