TURLOCK, Calif. — Stan State captured its first CCAA series win of the season and its third series victory overall, taking three of four from Cal Poly Pomona after a 9-8 win in Sunday's finale at Warrior Baseball Field.
The Warriors improved to 15-14 overall and 6-6 in the CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 16-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Stan State rebounded from a series-opening loss on Friday by winning the final three games to secure the 3-1 series win.
The series victory also marked Stan State's first series win over Cal Poly Pomona since April 21–23, 2023, when the Warriors won on the road in Pomona, and their first home series win over the Broncos since Feb. 20–22, 2009.
With the win, Stan State moved into fifth place in the CCAA standings with 20 games remaining in the regular season, with the top five teams advancing to the conference tournament in May.
Stan State built the cushion it needed early, scoring three runs in the first and three more in the second to grab a 6-0 lead.
Chris Ortiz keyed the fast start in the opening inning with a two-run home run to left that scored
Tyler Crudo. Later in the frame,
Bradley Morris doubled and
Mason Kelley followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
The Warriors added three more in the second.
Eric Perez opened the inning with a double,
Jacob Reyes moved him up with a sacrifice bunt, and Crudo brought him home with an RBI single. After
AJ Carter reached on a fielder's choice and
Zach Lewis singled, Ortiz struck again with a two-run double to center, extending the lead to 6-0.
Cal Poly Pomona chipped away with one run in the third and two unearned runs in the fourth before getting within 6-4 in the fifth.
Stan State answered in the sixth.
Chase Wilson doubled to start the inning and later scored on Carter's RBI groundout for a 7-4 advantage.
The Warriors added what proved to be critical insurance in the seventh. Morris singled, Wilson followed with a base hit, and Perez delivered an RBI double to right-center to score Morris. Reyes then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Wilson and pushing the lead to 9-4.
Cal Poly Pomona got one back on Evan Nahra's solo home run in the eighth, then mounted a late rally in the ninth. The Broncos loaded the bases and scored three runs to cut the deficit to 9-8 before
AJ Victoravich entered and recorded the final two outs to secure his first save of the season.
Evan Fanconi earned the win in relief, moving to 1-0 after tossing 3.0 strong innings. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out three. Victoravich picked up the save, while Matt Lorenzano took the loss for Cal Poly Pomona.
Ortiz led the Warriors offensively, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, including a home run and a double. Crudo finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, Perez went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Wilson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Morris added two hits and two runs.
