ARCATA, Calif. — In a season-opening matchup between two teams receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Preseason Poll, Stan State women's soccer fell 2-1 to Concordia Thursday afternoon at the Humboldt Kickoff Classic at College Creek Field. The Golden Eagles scored twice less than a minute apart midway through the first half before
Kyndra Obermeyer scored the first goal of her collegiate career early in the second half to pull the Warriors within one. Stan State falls to 0-1, while Concordia improves to 1-0.
First Half
Stan State generated the first shot on goal of the afternoon when
Kayla Perez tested Concordia goalkeeper Christina Sidoti in the 14th minute, but the Golden Eagles broke through midway through the period.
Bella Barrett gave Concordia a 1-0 advantage in the 25th minute, finishing a pass from Ashley Grubert at the 24:05 mark. Just 42 seconds later, Grubert converted a penalty kick to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 2-0.
The Warriors continued to create opportunities after falling behind.
Kyndra Obermeyer registered a pair of attempts, while
Aliah Avila and
Alyssa Hernandez each put shots on frame that were stopped by Sidoti. Stan State went into halftime trailing 2-0 despite producing six shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Second Half
Stan State wasted little time cutting into the deficit after halftime. Just 1:50 into the second half, Obermeyer scored the first goal of her collegiate career off an assist from
Olivia Maragos, bringing the Warriors within 2-1. The assist was the second of Maragos' career.
The Warriors continued to push for the equalizer throughout the second half.
Amanda Do put an attempt on goal in the 66th minute, and
Mandy Thao followed with another shot on frame less than two minutes later, but Sidoti turned away both opportunities.
Stan State's defense kept Concordia off the scoreboard over the final 45 minutes.
Zara Mujica made a save on Bella Barrett in the 53rd minute as the Warriors remained within one.
The Warriors were unable to find the equalizer over the closing minutes as Concordia held on for the 2-1 victory.

Central Washington opens its season this afternoon against host Cal Poly Humboldt. The Warriors are 6-1-1 all-time against Central Washington and have won the last four meetings in the series. Saturday will be the first meeting between the programs since Stan State defeated the Wildcats 3-1 on Sept. 1, 2018, in Turlock.
