CARSON, Calif.--- Stan State played its second consecutive five-set match to open CCAA play Saturday afternoon, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills 14-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 15-10 at the Torodome.
The Warriors (3-6, 0-2 CCAA) took the first and third sets and held a 2-1 advantage before the Toros rallied to win the final two. Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The match featured 21 ties and 14 lead changes.
Lauren Gonzales led Stan State with 13 kills, while
Maggie Olson finished with 12 kills and hit .300.
Emily Meyer had nine kills;
Lauren Hamilton added seven kills while hitting .300 and
Fallon Freeman finished with seven kills.
Bailey Morrison recorded a team-high 19 assists and eight digs, while
Ireland Avalos had 13 assists and a team-high 15 digs.
Rylee Szyszka added 19 digs. Hamilton led the Warriors at the net with six block assists as Stan State finished with 10 total team blocks.
First Set
Stan State came out quickly and rolled to a 25-14 victory. The Warriors broke away from an early 4-4 score with nine consecutive points, including three straight Gonzales service aces, to take a 13-4 advantage. Stan State never let the Toros back into the set and hit .320 with 11 kills while holding CSUDH to .033.
Second Set
Cal State Dominguez Hills answered with a 25-20 victory in a set that featured seven ties and five lead changes. Stan State erased an early deficit and took an 11-8 lead before the Toros responded. The teams were tied at 17 before CSUDH used a late run to even the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
The Warriors regained the match lead with a 25-21 victory. The third featured nine ties and seven lead changes before Stan State created separation late. Leading 18-17, the Warriors scored six of the next nine points to reach set point at 24-20 before Olson finished the set with a kill. Stan State hit .214 and recorded 13 kills in the frame.
Fourth Set
Stan State nearly erased an eight-point deficit before CSUDH held on for a 25-23 victory. The Toros led 15-7 before the Warriors worked their way back, using a late run to tie the set at 22-22. Gonzales answered a CSUDH point with a kill to tie it again at 23, but the Toros scored the final two points to force a fifth set.
Fifth Set
The Toros jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the deciding set. Stan State battled back and cut the deficit to 8-5 before CSUDH extended its advantage to 13-7. The Warriors scored three straight points to make it 13-10, but the Toros responded with the final two points for the 15-10 victory.
