SAN MARCOS, Calif.---Emmanuel Duran gave Stan State an early 1-0 lead, but Cal State San Marcos answered with three consecutive goals to defeat the Warriors 3-1 Sunday afternoon at The Cage. Duran scored his second goal of the season in the ninth minute before the Cougars responded with two first-half goals and added another after halftime.
FIRST HALF
Stan State struck first in the ninth minute. After putting a shot wide less than a minute earlier, Duran found the back of the net at the 8:25 mark to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage. The unassisted goal was Duran's second of the season.
Cal State San Marcos answered in the 18th minute when Cisco Avila scored his sixth goal of the season to even the match at 1-1.
Alexis Cervantes nearly put the Warriors back in front in the 21st minute, but his shot was stopped by CSUSM goalkeeper Yoel Vazquez.
The Cougars took the lead with just 10 seconds remaining in the half. Jacob Arellano scored his third goal of the season at 44:50 to send CSUSM into halftime with a 2-1 advantage. Stan State finished the opening half with four shots, including two on goal, while CSUSM had six shots and four on goal.
SECOND HALF
The Warriors came out looking for the equalizer and earned a corner kick just 31 seconds into the second half.
Hugo Canedo followed with a shot in the 52nd minute, but his attempt went high.
Cal State San Marcos extended its advantage in the 67th minute when Andrew Valencia scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Kyle Sherman to make it 3-1.
Stan State continued to push over the closing minutes.
Colin Davis had an attempt blocked in the 85th minute, Duran sent a shot wide in the 86th and Cervantes had a shot blocked in the 89th, but the Warriors couldn't cut into the deficit.
CSUSM finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

- With his 12th career goal, Duran moves into a tie for eighth on Stan State's career goals list with Tony Amaral.
