Troy Johnson is entering his 15th season as the head coach of the Stan State men's and women's track and field program. Since returning to lead the Warriors in 2013, Johnson has guided Stan State student-athletes to 31 All-American honors and 39 CCAA individual championships.
During the 2025-26 indoor season, Johnson guided six Warriors to USTFCCCA All-America honors. Annie Wild earned First Team All-America honors with a third-place finish in the mile and also garnered Second Team honors as part of the Distance Medley Relay team. Crystal Hernandez, Mila Real and Izzy Soto joined Wild on the USTFCCCA Second Team Distance Medley Relay squad following a ninth-place national finish, while Alexis Nino earned USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors in the shot put with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.
Johnson also coached numerous USTFCCCA All-West Region selections. On the women's indoor side, Crystal Hernandez, Mila Real, Izzy Soto and Annie Wild earned All-West Region honors in the Distance Medley Relay, while Wild was also recognized in the 800-meter run and mile. Alexis Nino received All-West Region honors in both the shot put and weight throw.
During the 2026 outdoor season, Andrew Bishop earned All-West Region honors in the 200-meter dash and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team. Logan Edwards was recognized in the hammer throw, Eric Green in the long jump, and Ivan Mendoza, Jaevin Sawyer and Blayne Siebert were All-West Region selections as members of the 4x100-meter relay squad. Alexis Nino also earned All-West Region honors in the hammer throw.
The Warriors continued their success in conference competition as Johnson coached nine All-CCAA performers. Alexis Nino earned First Team All-CCAA honors in the hammer throw and Third Team honors in the shot put, while Izzy Soto received Third Team honors in the 1,500 meters. The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Blayne Siebert, Andrew Bishop, Ivan Mendoza and Jaevin Sawyer captured First Team All-CCAA recognition. Logan Edwards was a First Team selection in the hammer throw, Andrew Bishop earned Second Team honors in the 200 meters, Luke Giannotta was a Second Team selection in the hammer throw, Timothy Miles earned Third Team honors in the 110-meter hurdles, and Mason Phillips was a Third Team selection in the shot put. Bishop was also named the CCAA Men's Freshman of the Meet.
During the 2024-25 season, Johnson guided three Warriors to All-America honors during the outdoor season in Trent Lauderdale (400-meter hurdles), Mila Real (400-meter hurdles) and Annie Wild (1,500 meters). Lauderdale, Wild and Jaevin Sawyer captured CCAA championships in their respective events. Altogether, the Warriors earned All-CCAA honors in 15 events, while Sawyer was named the CCAA Freshman Male Athlete of the Meet.
The 2024-25 indoor season was highlighted by Annie Wild becoming the first Warrior in program history to win a national championship, capturing the mile title at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
During the 2023-24 season, Johnson coached one All-American, five CCAA champions, 13 All-CCAA honorees and nine All-Region selections. The Warriors also excelled in the classroom as 12 student-athletes were named to the CCAA Academic Honor Roll, seven earned Academic All-District honors, six received USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition and both the men's and women's teams were recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams.
Johnson served as a full-time assistant coach at Stan State from 2000 to 2007, where his emphasis included coaching student-athletes in the sprints, jumps and multi-events disciplines. He returned to Turlock during the 2013 outdoor season to assist interim head coach Diljeet Taylor before assuming leadership of the program.
From 2007 to 2012, Johnson was the head coach for track and field and cross country at Cal Poly Pomona, where he led the Broncos to numerous national championship appearances and coached eight individual All-Americans. Seven of his teams also earned Academic All-America Team honors. In 2010, both of Johnson's cross country teams were ranked among the nation's Top 25 for the first time in school history. All four programs under his direction maintained team GPAs above 3.0 and received numerous CCAA All-Academic Team awards.
Since 2000, Johnson has coached 39 All-Americans and 36 conference champions, including two-time national champion Chaunte Mitchell. Johnson helped Stanislaus claim its first gold medal at the 2008 World Indoor Championships when 2007 NCAA Division II national runner-up Joel Stallworth ran on Team USA's gold medal-winning 4x400-meter relay team. Johnson has also helped coach 85 student-athletes to NCAA Championship appearances.
Johnson, who is actively involved with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), has served on the executive committee as first vice president and currently serves as a conference representative.
Johnson is a USATF Level I certified instructor and holds USATF Level II certifications in Endurance, Jumps and Sprints/Hurdles. He has completed his IAAF Level V Diploma and USATF Level III certification in Sprints/Hurdles/Relays. Johnson has spoken at clinics and educational events for LA84, PAUSATF and USATF.
In 2008, Johnson hosted the NCAA Division II Track and Field National Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. He has also volunteered at numerous NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships and at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.
An Akron, Ohio, native, Johnson graduated from Utah State University in 1994, where he competed for the Aggies' track and field team. He was the 1993 Big West Conference champion in the 400 meters and ran on championship 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams while also finishing second in the 200 meters. Both relay teams established school records. During the indoor season, he won the MPSF 400-meter title and formerly held the school indoor record in the event. He earned his master's degree in Human Performance in Sport from New Mexico Highlands University in 2010.
Johnson earned a provisional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials. He also competed at Cuesta College, where he served as team captain, earned team MVP honors in 1991, won the Western State Conference 400-meter title and still holds the school record in the event.
Johnson also spent three years with the Utah State University Police Department in Logan, Utah.
Johnson, his wife Erlynn and their daughter Ela reside in Turlock.
