TURLOCK — The Warriors suffered their fifth one-goal loss of the season on Monday afternoon, as the Western Washington Vikings were able to hold on for a 1-0 victory.
The Vikings got on the board early when forward Samir Vejo put the ball in the net just 10 minutes into the game. Gibson Bardsley was credited with the assist.
We were definitely lacking focus and intensity in the first 15 minutes of the game and that's when they scored their goal. As the game progressed we played better,” said Warrior head coach Eric Mild.
Cal State Stanislaus went on the offensive in the second half, putting up 11 shots, including six on goal.
The Warriors barely missed tying the game in the 80th minute when forward
Dennis Wolfe fired a bullet to the top of the net, only to see it punch-saved by the leaping Viking goalkeeper Michael Lockwood.
Another near miss came off of a corner kick with less than eight minutes to play.
Kyle Lindquist sent a header towards the goal, but it ended up right in the hands of Lockwood. Former Warrior baseball player
Kevin McCarthy played hard and determined all game after coming off the bench. McCarthy had four shots in the game with two on-goal.
“In the second half I felt like we were dominating most of the play, unfortunately we're snake-bitten when it comes to scoring goals,” said Mild. “
Kevin McCarthy had an excellent game and he inspired our team in the second half without a doubt.”
With the shutout loss, the Warriors have now been held scoreless for the last 401 minutes of game play. Their last goal came on the road against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 21 in the 88th minute. Their record now stands at 2-8-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Vikings improved their overall record to 7-4.
The Warriors will head back into CCAA play at 12:30 p.m. on Friday when they travel to Seaside to face the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay.
