TURLOCK --- With high hopes of putting up a couple of wins this week against two non-ranked teams, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss to visiting Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday night.
Emily Evans had 14 kills and Marissa Miller added 12 as the NDNU Argonauts took care of the Warriors, 30-22, 30-26, 24-30, 30-13, in the non-conference match. Freshman
Jen Gee and senior
Debbie Vander Schaaf each had eight kills and
Megan Loghry seven to lead Stanislaus.
"It's been a bitter sweet season. We have had some great individual performances, but we haven't been able to put up the W's in the Win-Loss record that's so important in sports," CSUS head coach Chris Difani said.
Among the great performances for the Warriors included senior
Caitlin Steffeck, who set a school record with career blocks last weekend. Tonight with three more total blocks to her name, she's notched her 300th career block. Vander Schaaf continues to move up the single season records chart with eight more digs tonight and freshman libero
Megan Britton recorded 11 digs and is now just six shy of setting a new single season mark.
On Wednesday night, however, the records mattered little with the team hungry to snap an eight-match losing streak against a 8-15 NDNU team coming off a long road trip to Hawaii. However, it was the Argonauts coming out strong taking games one and two.
Stanislaus (5-20) managed a strong game three rolling of eight of the game's final nine points to take the set 30-24. Karly Van Foeken came in and got a kill and rolled off four points on serve to close out the game.
That momentum didn't last very long as NDNU took off to a 12-1 lead in game four, including 11 unanswered points en route to the easy game four win.
Setter
Colleen Sullivan was credited with 31 assists while Steffeck and Van Foeken each finished with six kills. Loghry also had four block-assists. CSUS, however, had 15 service errors and 12 serve receive errors to go with 11 ball handling errors.
Evans also had nine digs and six blocks for NDNU. Caitlin Torres added nine kills and six blocks to pace the Argonauts.
This week marks the first time in a month that the Warriors won't have to face a nationally ranked team in a tough California Collegiate Athletic Association. Saturday night Stanislaus will face Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros enters the week 2-22 overall and 1-12 in the CCAA, sharing the bottom of the standings with CSUS.
