SAN FRANCISCO --- Vincent Moreno, Cherise McNair and Erin Frier were the top Division II runners as the Warriors men's and women's cross country teams turned in a great day at the San Francisco State Gator Invitational at Golden Gate Park.
Moreno was the top collegiate finisher in the men's 8K run in a time of 25:29. He finishes behind two unattached runners including former Chico runner Antonio Miramontes, who finished first at 25:12. Without their top two runners
Bobby Olivera and
Jose Morales, the Warrior men finished fourth in the team standings behind Chico State, Cal and University of San Francisco. Chico State men won the team competition with its "B" squad. The Wildcats edged Cal 33-40.
"Vincent has done an outstanding job, we were a little cautious with him today and had him go out slower after last week," CSUS head coach
Kim Duyst said. At the Stanford Invitational last week, Moren collided with a runner and went down with a pulled muscle when he was among the top 25 runners. "I was real pleased with his week of recovering and coming out and doing well today."
Shane Brookshire and
Martin Ramos were the next CSUS runners to finish clocking 27:03 and 27:07 to finish 30th and 32nd, respectively. Duyst rested Olivera this weekend and Morales was attending a wedding.
On the women's side, McNair was fifth in 22:40, following by Frier just six seconds later. Clarissa Rivera was 15th in 23:28, as the Warriors' top three closed their gap to 48 seconds. McNair was 15 seconds behind winner Michelle Born of USF. Three Division I runners and a Bananaslug from UC Santa Cruz finished ahead of McNair.
"Our women ran very, very well. We still need to get our fourth and fifth runners up higher, but they did well and are improving," Duyst said. "Clarissa (Rivera) really stepped up and closed our gap in the top three. Both Erin and Cherie can run with the best of Chico State and UC San Diego."
As a team, the Warriors finished tied for third with Chico State, which did not have its top runners at this meet. USF was first with 48 points, followed by Cal with 71. CSUS finished ahead of other Division I programs University of the Pacific and Saint Mary's College.
The Warriors will take next weekend off from competition as they prepared to host the 2007 CCAA Cross Country Championships on the campus course on Oct. 20.
