TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team snapped a couple of streaks with the win on Friday and the Warriors did it playing with a man-down for most of the second half.
Jose Velasquez's first half goal held up and the Warriors defeated visiting UC San Diego, 1-0, at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex. The win ended the Warriors' eight-match losing skid, which was the longest since the start of the 2001 season. Cal State Stanislaus also beat UCSD for the first time during the CCAA era after going 7-0-1 in the first eight meetings.
The Warriors improved to 2-8-1 overall and 1-7-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego, shutout for the fourth straight match, is now 6-4-2, 3-4-2.
Velasquez scored at 10:53 on a great play.
Trevor Grimbleby headed a UCSD punt at midfield to Velasquez just outside of the box on the right side. Velasquez tips the ball between goalkeeper Peter Akman's legs for the score.
That proved to be all the Warriors needed for the win, but it wasn't without challenges. UC San Diego kept the pressure on the entire match and played with an one-man advantage over the final 32 minutes.
Stanislaus defender
Thomas Janz was shown a red card at 58:03 on a hard tackle and the match turned physical from that point on. But the Warriors, with strong defensive play forced the Tritons to be erratic with their shots. Of their 14 shots, the Tritons managed one on goal, picked up by CSUS goalkeeper
Javier Rosales.
